1966 L72 Impala

Looked at this today. Factory 4.10s - couldn't verify the M22 claim. Super solid car from Washington state. What's something like this worth?

One of my local car buddies has an original L72 convertible....he told me the cowl tag denotes the type of 4spd...and that only the L72 got the M21...not sure about the rock crusher..

Not sure on value...but, show me another one??

There's a lot of variables to look at to try to hone in on a price. Is the drive-train born with, all the parts there? Is there any paperwork? Do you have a better picture of the cowl tag? How about the gauge package, engine stamping? On original cars there wasn't any chrome on the engine.
You could've received a possible 4 different transmissions with an L72 in a full size Chevrolet car in '66. If you didn't specify you wanted a 4 speed then you would've received a 3 speed on the tree. M20, M21 and M22 were all available. Without paperwork M22's would be difficult to believe since according to Chevrolet documents there were only 2 full size cars that left the factory with one, M21 - 1,595 and M20 - 30,467. I was told the gear ratio of the axle determined which transmission you would've received. I don't recall what the dividing point was, but with 4.10s it probably had an M21. The cowl tag would only tell you if it was wide ratio or close ratio Q for close, W for wide.

The 2Q on the tag automatically means it has a close ratio. 2F is the console gauges. Also see the 7K tach. Neat car! I hope it stays as an original rather than be restored. Hopefully it has the correct radiator and breather, as those are very tough items to find. It certainly looks nice enough to preserve. If it has the born with engine and trans, I'd value it in the mid-high 30s, but we need more info.

Looks like the engine has the Idler arm and pulley. Can't tell if the 7K tach has a 6K red line.
However, If the car was born with an M21 and it looks that way then the car is an L72 car.

Well, now that we see the POP it's quite obvious an L72 car, "ID" coded engine.
As far as the trans, the M20, M21 and M22 all use the same Maincase casting number, Sidecover casting number and Extension housing casting number.

Also, get the casting number from the Muncie case. Body was built 4th week of March and trans was built almost 2 months after that? May 22nd. I wonder if they used a leftover 65 M21. It's probably 3851325. I'd be surprised if it was 3885010, as the POP looks ok but a pic of the dealer page would be helpful.

Yes 9/17/66. I've seen that date several other times, used as late as on a May car! Low volume axle, which makes sense.

That's neat it's a 65 Muncie. Probably a leftover. If you get a chance, see if there is a metal part number tag attached by one of the sidecover bolts on the main case. Partial vin number should be on the top of the case, near the front.

Very COOL! I sold an original air cleaner off a 1966 L-72 like this about 3 years ago for $750.00 and that I thought was a DEAL! . They are VERY hard to find.

Unfortunately, that tag is long gone. Apple Chevrolet in Washington was original selling dealer.

Air cleaner looks good, correct snorkels, should have a flat bottom. Correct 696 alternator for a K66 (L Dec. date) equipped car. Interesting about the distributor. The part number 1111137 (M Dec. date) on the band points to a 396/325hp engine. It's possible a mix-up on the line happened?? :dunno: He was looking for an idea on price. I was talking to a buddy who knows the '66 Chevy prices really well. He was saying around 40-45k. It'd be nice to see a picture of the stamping on the engine pad.
