Hi Guys, I just bought this 1969 375hp Nova SS and the guy told me it was a L89 car. Do you know how I could verify it? It has the 12 bolt with 456 gears and it also has a fin on the back. Thanks
PS The picture is to big and I have to resize it.

If the car has a TH400 then there should be JM as the last two digits on the engine pad.

If the car has a 4 speed then there should be KE as the last two digits on the engine pad.

Example below is a Corvette 427/390 HP with manual trans (IL)

https://s18.postimg.org/57hcv39ix/image.jpg (https://postimages.org/)

EDIT: It is not that difficult to restamp an engine BTW once it has been decked. So even if you see a JM or KE, without bulletproof documentation there is no way to prove your car has/had an L89 in it.

"fin on the back" original L89 Nova's were able to get airborne. Nothing stokes the fire more than those 7 digits, L89 Nova. Hope the buyer maybe got an orig L78 Nova out of it and good luck with the project

GM production records do not record any L89 units produced in a Nova in 1969

What about that '70 Nova that Legendary Motor Car restored that was supposed to be the ONLY L89 and said to have docs to back that up??

Just asking.

The car was at Macan one time a few years ago. The car had many issues, we;ll leave it go at that. Since then, it;s been passed around alot. Question: Who would let go of a rare car. If your a true hobbist??? BBBenny

Congrats on your car Timmy and welcome aboard!
L89 or not, a '69 w/ factory 4:56 would be a Copo 9511 car so please include axle tube #'s w/ your details.
:beers:

No midnight blue metallic in 69 on a Nova. Check the trim tag again please.

So Pete would that be a BW stamp? 68 Nova would have been RPO. 69 Camaro would have been RPO I believe. Must have been a performance dealer to have the know how to get it in a Nova.

There was a dark blue. Perhaps that's what he means?

With Steve in charge.........I'm sure that protecting the Pedigree of Rare cars is back in vogue............That's what this site is and should be about.........."AND"........If there is any questions about L-89 cars in the future.........Check the color of the distributor cap.......We got it from the source (the owner at the time of the 1 of 1 L-89 Black Nova) that "ALL" L-89 's had Tan Caps..............Just passing along information collected along the way.....

Possibly, but guess I'd think that with a "possible" L89 Nova, you would try to be dead on with the info. A generic color without trim tag code seems to not bode well for credibility on further items that may reflect on the cars pedigree.

the 69 L78 Nova I sold 4-5 years ago had a BW stamped rear, COPO or RPO.? who knows for sure. All the original guts from the rear where changed out. I have pics of the tube stamp some where. Think I may have posted them here somewhere.?

Dusk Blue, black vinyl top, 731 plain jane interior [rubber floor mat car], A-3, black interior trim with 3 exterior trim options, 1st week of July, 3/8 fuel line and correct looking tank sender/line, BB heater core, BB radiator. Hard to tell much else from the photos..

Is that one picture a date stamp on an aluminum head..??

Lets clean off the snow and jump in for better pics and more details...

Hell, it's winter...what else do we have to do :dunno:

Not to cloud this thread, but could you possibly pm a link to the silver Nova? I'm curious if it's the one I ran around with in the 80's in the Cincinnati area.
Thanks

I believe there have been 2 different "L89" Novas that have made the rounds in the car world...they were both 1970 model year....one was black [which I have seen] and the other was silver. Here are some links to various articles and for sale ads I found...I'm sure there are more out there if you are bored and want something to do.

If you have an L89 Nova and want to have it 'verified' and 'authenticated' please contact Ken Tibor [kwhizz] he is the leading authority on these cars and his personal knowledge is second to none :smirk:

Wow, thanks Wilma.
The car I've lost it's whereabouts was a silver 69, auto, column shift bench seat black interior with 4.56 rear. Long story on the car I won't cloud the thread with. I was just hoping the silver one mentioned might be the car.
Sorry guys, carry on.

Oh, I just realized you're in New York Wilma. That's where I was told this car wound up when a friend of mine sold it, in the early or mid 90's I think it was.

There was a 69 L89 auto on the column in Maryland years ago. I think it also had a special order COPO brake system on it.

That sounds like some seller BS. Brakes are safety items - *highly* doubtful COPO item.
