I used to now that lol. Losing my memory. The Mr G shifter was clearly a better design and rolled over Hurst in sales.

They both came out about the same time approx 1971.HR or CC did a Sema type story on the Mr gasket shifter in 1970..it was a pre production type unit.

Actually the Bieber shifter predated them both but it was drag racing only. Motion put a Bieber in one of their cars

I had a Mr Gasket vertical gate in my old F85 (now Dan Reimer's car). Great shifter and just felt rock solid. The action was easy to get used to and pretty intuitive.

The obvious downside is having to slice up your floorpan to accommodate one of these.

I've got 2 of the Hurst shifters. One of them is probably going in my Chevelle. I was going to use one in my Camaro, but I thought I would get tired of pulling up on the T every time I downshifted. I've got a Super Shifter with the separate reverse lever going in the Camaro now.

You can not miss a shift with this shifter, the original owner of the car built this custom trans tunnel for this.

The cover is great but the huge machanical linkage is the real beauty that lies underneath!!

Come on Dan give us a picture of the inner workings!!!!

Had both, still have a Mr Gasket. I can shift as fast with a Hurst SS2, but sometimes that short throw works against you as it's hard to get a positive feel with it if you get what I mean.

IIRC, Hurst designed the Ram Rod in the late 50’s but didn’t produce it. Then Mr. Gasket came out with the V-Gate in the early 70’s which pushed Hurst to start producing the Ram Rod.

As far as which one is better is very debatable......all I can say is I’ve heard a lot more complaints about the V-Gate than the Ram Rod. The main complaint is getting caught between gears and the two finger T-handle is hard to reach. Another is not being able to downshift when the vehicle is moving. I can tell you that I absolutely love my Ram Rod.....it’s very solid and a much simpler design compared the V-Gate.

Just my $.02.

This is all I have left of mine... sent it back years ago for a rebuild and they threw it out and replaced it with a Hurst. That trigger didn’t fit my fingers very well, painful on the street.

The hole in the floor of my Road Runner was .... massive. No other way to describe it..

I thought there was an early and late design of the Hurst Shifter. The earlier one had a chrome, flatter reverse stick. May have even had a different name.

This is a terrible pic, but neat, sparkle decal tee handle was original to this shifter I was told. Don't see many of them.

Yes, with ease. I have a quick video on Facebook of me shifting my Chevelle in town.

The RamRod is very easy to setup. After bolting it to the transmission, put the shifter in neutral, engage the reverse in reverse. That locks the shifter so it can’t move and it’s exactly where it needs to be for setting up the shifter rods. Then you set up the shifter rods to the levers on the transmission. After that, take it out of reverse and it’s good to go.....very simple.

I absolutely love this thread and read all 12 pages of the other. It's pure torture as I want to install a RamRod but don't want to go cutting up a restored floor or tunnel. Still very very tempting.

I suggest you cut it up!!!

I would respect you more as a car guy if you went with your heart!!

I love paint daubs and chalk marks but true fun is more important to me:-) I have all the shifter upgrades lined up for my car.... one by one I will enjoy them:-)

If you need someone to make the insition I would gladly take the heat from all the Camaro guys, as we let-er-rip!!!

Price depends on condition and completeness...

I usually get $450.00 for reconditioned complete shifter with nice original chrome handle...

I guess you’re asking about my Olds....not an f85, but a Cutlass S model. The engine is a 1969 350 w/ #5 heads and 255 Q-Jet. Trans is a Jerico and run 4.88 in a 12 bolt with Strange axles and spool. Thanks for the interest.

I’ve heard of some guys having to extend the rod to make it so the trigger was easier to reach.

Not an issue with the Ram Rod. :3gears:

I have used a coupler nut and short 1/4 x 20 thread stud to extend the trigger shaft. I also have heated and bent the reverse lever to clear a bench seat. I have used the Mr. Gasket vertical gate since the 1970s, street and strip. It is my favorite shifter. I tried the Hurst Ram Rod first in the early/mid 70s but hated it. It tended to hang up in a gear or miss the shift, and yes I adjusted the rods carefully. In contrast the Mr. Gasket is flawless. After they bought Hurst in the 1980s, the continued selling their vertical gate as the Hurst V-Gate 2.

It hurt to cut this. For about 5 minutes until I rowed it through the gears...
The shifter seems like it will rattle around a bit but I don’t care. The only thing I’m confused about is I paid through the nose (double what I paid for the shifter itself!) for the correct boot but I have NO idea how to make it conform to the trans tunnel. Anyone have a pic of the shifter with correct boot?

Looks like a 70-72 Chevelle....but the hole looks a lot like the one on my Ol' B body Mopar.

When they say hack a hole for a Verti-Gate.....they ain't kidding.

This is my ‘69 that I’ve been trying to finish up for 15 years now. I’m going with a Day 3 type look with the V-gate, Gold Moroso valve covers, Lakewood ladder bars and the Centerline Auto-Drags.

I hesitated to post on this forum since my car is nowhere near the caliber as the rest of you guys but the V-gate thread intrigued me. I still need to figure out how this boot is supposed to work with trans tunnel hump. (I know I said gold valve covers but the last set on eBay was almost $400 and I picked up these blue ones with air cleaner for $50. I’m hoping to powdercoat them the color I want.)

I had one of the Vertigates in my 1969 Z11 Pace Car back in high school (1979 or so). I cut a significant amount out of the tunnel to get it to fit.

And there is no way you can get that bazillion dollar shifter boot to fit without either building a new flat topped tunnel or bending the #%$ out of the boot trim ring and ruining it. Which will make it look totally Day 2, by the way.
