Looking for Filter Material Ideas for Air Cleaner

I would like to pick some member’s brains as to what they use for air cleaner filter material? I want to run velocity stacks I already have. At the top of the bell of each stack are 2 perforated screens to sandwich foam between. I could buy a furnace filter and cut to size. I don’t know if the foam is readily available? Any members have this dilemma and their advice?

I'd try to find something that wasn't flammable. I caught my carburetor on fire about a dozen times Thrusday. If I had a foam filter on it I might not have a car now.

Do boats have air cleaners or just a flame arrester? pretty sure everything in boats I think has to be non flammable.

I've seen boats with a woven stainless steel type filter, or flame arrestor. I don't know how well they filter, or how much air they will flow. I've seen velocity stacks with small round paper filters on top.

Not versed in boat setups, but I don’t think boats will provide much useful info except what Scott pointed out. That being, the flammability of a filter material, which is a good point.

I do not want anything sitting on top of the stack. Must be concealed below the top of the stack. Thanks.

I had the same flat-top velocity stacks on my car and swapped them out for the velocity stacks with the air cleaners on top as the fear of fire got the best of me, but I'd like to put the old flat ones back on it sometime if I can find something that is flame/fire resistant.

I like that. Red would look...well, red! Pretty cool. I am wondering if a flameproof coating or flame retardant spray is available? And how would that effect the filtration?

Why not test the filter buy doing a burn test before trying frame retardants.

Just by looking at at it I would say no. Plastic based just like the MR G filters and they burn and melt.

I briefly looked online and most of the furnace filters you see are flame retardent. There
are literally hundreds of co's making flame retardent filters and materials.

I went with a 40 mesh stainless steel screen we use at work on industrial burners. No burn, great filter and high flow.

There appear to be a lot of places that sell that 40 mesh stainless steel screen such as Amazon and eBay. I have to say, it looks a little thin to work with my velocity stacks, however.

This company makes their own flame resistant filter.
You might want to ask if they will just sell you the filter no air cleaner.

Bentley, how are you going to install the filter material? Is there something in the velocity stacks to attach it to?

Freddie, I have the VS on my car, though I'm not sure if they're the same as Bentley's, mine have two metal screens at the top of the VS and the filter material goes between the two circular metal screens. The VS diameter is smaller and the lower screen sits on a ridge with the filter material on top and the top metal screen goes on top of the filter material with a round spring that expands into a flange at the top of the VS. Terrible explanation, sorry, but that's how mine work.

Yes. I have tried. It hits the hood.. Might could cut the bottom down to allow it to drop further over the carb but as is it hit on my old 67.

That velocity stack with the foam was second worst of the 19 air cleaners they tested, killed 72.4Hp and they felt it was a restriction with much more then a 300Hp engine. They didn't test that style of Fly eye, but I could see it hurting some major Hp too.

Seems getting the air UP away from carb and then a straight direct shot down the venturis is the best for Hp. That last one above is just an abomination. But if you need filtration and have limited hood clearance?????

I tried to watch this again and it looks like you can't watch them now without being a subscriber. I bought a set of those velocity stacks with the foam inserts and they don't seem to work very well. I'm looking at https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g3006 now and wondering if they are better. I wish I could watch that video again.

Maybe check with Universal Spinners in Toronto. He builds custom drop base filters for racers and guys with big blocks that want to fit air filters under the hood, and also does custom filters. I had him build a drop base filter to fit under the hood of my 55 years ago and loved his stuff.

I was playing around with installing a small air filter inside of a fly eye.
It fits under the fly eye top screen

I was thinking of cutting the base of the small air filter to fit it inside the fly eye to hold everything in place but have not tried that yet.

I don't think that would provide nearly enough air for even a small block. Probably be hidden and give " the look" though.
