Thanks, Bruce. Too kind. Sammitron, missed you among others this year at MCACN.
Spent some time today seeing if my idea of using a donor convertible top would work and surprisingly, it does......sorta. It falls a little short on the header panel but the width is about as perfect as I could ask for.
228658
228659
228660
I used a piece of sheet metal to extend the header panel just to see how it'll line up. Obviously, more work needed (ya think?) but I'm liking the preliminary vision. :headbang:

I don't know what that actually means, but it sounded good at the time :dunno:
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Not surprised. About 40 years ago, there were a LOT of guys in that club that would have gone ape chit over this build. Different world today. Starting changing to mostly yuppies in the late 80s. A guy named Rob Siegel had a column in the Roundel (the car club magazine) every month entitle "The Hack Mechanic", and it was awesome. I don't know how long since he quit writing. These days a "diy" column might be about changing the floor mats. Well, maybe not that bad, but you get the picture.

That’s a good point, Lynn. Very few threads on the Ferrari forum too about actually working on the car versus where to get service done, wax, etc. But then again, those cars are a lot more complicated than these old schoolies!

Back in the 1980's I had a grey market 635 CSI Sharknose Euro car in Polaris Silver with black BMW Motorsport stripes. Coolest commuter car on the planet. I used to drive it from New Haven to Boston every week while attending law school. (I'd commute back home on weekends to work on the musclecars). Sold it in early 1990's. Then I got an M3 in 1998 but sold it year or so later. Even in 1998, the tide had turned on the BMW websites. It was all about where to get your oil changed and what oil to request and the best wax for your detailer to use on your car. Ugh. Not one thread on how to work on the car yourself. That was a main reason I went back to the old cars and websites like this where real manly persons (like Dave) do manly things to manly cars.

For P-cars http://forums.pelicanparts.com
For bimmers http://forums.pelicanparts.com/bmw-forums/
Both of these have lots of hands on, how-to technical information
Yes they do. There are still some active bimmerphiles that actually work on cars on a couple other sites as well.
Steve, my son is getting ready to start restoration of a 1980 Euro model 635CSi. I am still driving my 83 745i turbo car, which is also a Euro model, as it was never offered in the US. I believe that may have been the first production car with the "new" anti lock brakes.
Sorry for the thread hijack Dave.

Sorry for the thread hijack Dave.
Hijack continued...My 635 was a 1981. Amazing automobile (except for the A/C that would instantly freeze up the evaporator and nothing would come out of the vents.) But zooming on the interstate with that manual transmission and 6 cylinder just purring away. New Haven to Boston was a 120 mile trip and I could make it in around 90 minutes on a good day. That was before the Connecticut Stae Troopers purchased a fleet of Buick Gran Nationals and initiated their "Wolfpack" hunting teams for speeders. Fun times while it lasted.
Played around with BMW's right after college graduation. DD was an early 80's Hartge modified Euro 323i. This was a straight 6 engine 3-series back when only the 4 cylinder 320i was available in the US. I added nitrous on it as well and it would smoke most cars from a red light and handled like it was on rails. Was a great car and looked killer with the Euro bumpers.
Now back to the thread. What an incredible build. I really enjoy the updates and of course the pace of the build is impressive to say the least. Go Super Dave.

Joe,
That’s an extremely late Series II, only ten from the last one. Once again, an owner passes on and everything of his gets sold:frown:. This one, Chassis #143, so for just shy of $2mil USD last weekend.

While at MCACN, I was chatting with John Kraman thanking him for the kind words when announcing my 68 Mustang selling at Mecum Dallas a few years ago, and the subject of my 507 build came up. Understandably, he questioned my sanity but did mention this car although nothing had been announced. Now here it is!
Looks like a road trip to Kissimmee!!:burnout:

Hey Darrel,
I’ve been doing small stuff not too worthy of updates, but will post up more next month since I’m sporting some vacation time and I’ll be able to get more things done on it. I’ve been side tracked with a Lucas Electric disaster on the XKE which replacing one switch has resulted in a total rewiring, new interior, and who knows what else!:rolleyes2: Yep, two projects at once. I mean, I have to keep the Super Dave moniker alive somehow!:tongue:
Right I’m building a body dolly for it so I can move it in and out of the shop for sanding and priming when necessary. I’m also having the side and front grilles CNCed along with valve covers cast for the 215 replicating the factory covers exactly. Hunting for an engine builder at the moment too.
Merry Christmas to you!!

Excellent press photo, Lee! :headbang: Always motivation seeing any and all pictures of these.
Now that the Jag is done (for now) it’s back onto the 507 and I decided to tackle the doors. I really only have the shell done which is just a skin and a few stations right now. I kept it all open purposefully so I can manage the innards. Part of the hours spent on this project are not so much in the shop as they are figuring out what to use for various parts of the car like door handles, locks, windows, wheels, etc. Studying the 507 shows the curves and slender design in even stuff like the door handles. I spent hours searching various classic car door handles and came up with 1955 Chrysler Windsor handles that fit the bill nicely. I like they way the function and they pull outward like the 507s do. But with that, what about the latch/striker? I couldn’t find those anywhere (the handles were off ebay) so then I decided to look for mechanisms that function off a push button rather than a pull lever. Lo and behold, the XKE had just the thing!:scholar:
232347
232348
Now, knowing I really shouldn’t take them off my Jag, I studied the movement and confirmed it would work with a minor modification. So, ebay to the rescue! I bough a set of latches, guides, and striker plates so now it’s just a matter of making this all somehow fit together.:confused2:
232349
232346
I’m happy to report the door latches nicely and opens easily too. Alignment is right on!:eek2: So that’s just one example of how much research I’ve put into this. Next up on “This old 507” is episode 17: Door glass!!!!!

Since Dave mentioned the MD-80 / DC-9 Cockpit Window mechanism, I had to post a few pix. The green cockpit is of the DC-9, which Dave and I flew together for TWA throughout the Midwest. The gray cockpit is a derivative of the DC-9, the MD-80. Check out the side window mechanism, same for the 80 and -9. I was always amazed by that set up, it worked well. As basic as the DC-9 was, it was a blast to fly.

Sniff…ah, memories, Phil:frown:
Phil and I go through recurrent training yearly where we go over emergency procedures when something goes wrong like wings falling and digesting the fish from the crew meal. Anywho, Phil, just happened to post a pic that was our evacuation checklist and we needed to know the actions by memory. You see the numbers, so let me explain the actions in the order of execution :scholar:
1. Remove scratch paper with slandering drawing of chief pilot from clip holder
2. Discover “On Ground Emergency” checklist on yoke and proceed to run the checklist, but first…
3. Call Flight Attendant and notify them coffee is no longer needed
4. Realize the Captain is senior to you so move the trim wheel to make a noise which scares him and makes him forget the next steps of the checklist
5. Realize this panel was here all the time but not really sure what it was for
6. Grab window handle, pull straightward, the downside right to the back area, wait for click, the rotate frontwise.
7. If Captain is still in cockpit, tell him to grab the “auto exit” button on the window and verify incapacitation after he reacts to 400v AC shock from window heat connector.
8. Adjust lighting to see where yer’ goin’
9. Make sure light shines
10. punch all buttons on this panel hoping in panic mode you hit the PA
11. Verify this panel is in place for some reason
12. Announce evacuation, “Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your Captain. We know you have a choice in airlines, and today it looks like you chose the wrong one. EVACUATE!!! Thanks for flying with and i wish you a pleasant onward journey.”
13. Verify maintained test only panel isn’t in “test” mode creating evacuation
14. Stow tray table to the most upright and stowed position
15. Check adult magazine holder and grab 1976 Edition of “Jugs” and take with. Can’t leave evidence around.
There you have it. Miss flying with ya Phil!!
Cheers

Moving forward and collecting more parts. Here are the brake master cylinder and clutch master cylinder. The brake system on the 507 uses a remote booster which is housed in the inner fender behind the wheel house and immediately below the side vent. Depending on model and production date, the location varied on what side it was on. I finally found a suitable remote booster and that will be here next week.
235618
The other news is the motor was just picked up by the shipper and should be here next week too! This is the Olds 215 versus the Buick 215. I was able to do a swap with a gentleman who builds these for the MG crowd (a popular swap) and we worked a deal to trade motors. Really worked out well. The engine was run for a few hours and is ready to go! After installation and when things are all running correctly I'll add my BMWesque parts to get it closer to looking the part.
235619
These are faux knock off caps and a wheel plate that I'll fabricate a center cap that will give the illusion of the Rudge knock off wheels. Unscrew the knock off lug and the cap will come off revealing the lugs for easy wheel removal.

And a much needed update!
Here’s the remote brake booster saddled up inside the inner fender along with a reinforcing plate for the pedal quadrant. This will bolt in so the bracket will be painted separately. It’s in the exact spot that the factory has it. The other side of the firewall houses the power antenna. Series 1 and early Series 2 had the booster on the other side. The dots are reference marks for the holes to drill for welding. I welded this to the firewall from the inside so as not to create spot weld marks. It will be painted black like the factory.

The radiator is on its way here! Here’s the gauges. I had Speed Hut make them using an existing platform. They were very accommodating. They are similar to the originals, but my goal was to make a face that was identical. Every place I contacted saying, “We make custom gauges, built to suit, yadda-yadda” came back and said, “Yeah, we don’t do ‘custom’ gauges. We just redesign what we have with logos and junk’.:rolleyes2: One place was all about using an existing gauge and making the face. And then they told me it’d be two years waiting until they could get to them. In other words, we don’t want to do it.:bs:
237304
237305
But I like these! It beats the standard Autometer look. Although they are a tad smaller, with filler rings I’m having printed, they’ll fit in the bezel nicely.
I’m incorporating a few factory parts to make the whole assembly appear more correct. I befriended a gentleman in Germany who works with Martelleria which is the company that restores many 507s, 300SLs, and a few other exotic makes/models, and he’s been gracious enough to sell me a few needed parts. One is the distributor cap cover for the V8 engine. Extremely rare. I’ll incorporate this onto the stock cap along with the cast valve covers I’m making and a few other things. Aesthetically, the engine will appear like the 507 V8.
237306
The other part is a an under hood tool kit. These are pretty hard to come by too, and he happened to have one that needed a restoration. They have a molded inside that conforms to the tools. BOING!!!!:biggthumpup::biggthumpup:

As we discussed early on during this build, everything on the car will be functional. Convertible top, side windows, wipers, and one of those things that I plan making functional is the heater and fresh air system. Sounds easy. Agreed. Well, it’s not.:mad2: Of course I’m not sure what exactly is on this car. I know based on my photo archive and such that the heater plenum on the cowl connects to the fresh air intake on the cowl. But how’s the whole thing work?:confused2: I was fortunate to have access to several restoration photos and owners sharing info with me and here’s the jist of it; Air comes in from the cowl and gets routed through the plenum to the heater fan box and then is distributors to the footwells and defroster vents. The air enters the plenum and curves upwards and then downward. There’s a flapper door inside the plenum which closes the air off if one doesn’t desire to smell the sewage plant you just drove by or the guy ahead of you hasn’t change plugs in his 1976 Datsun since, well, 1976. Meanwhile, any rain is captured at the bottom of the curved plenum and blocked by a little dam and then drained to the cowl via three drain holes. Easy-Peary!:bs:
I had already made the firewall cover box but had not made the intake plenum. I also notice an error on my box. That doesn’t sound right. :eek2: I noticed a fabrication detail error on the cover of the heater plenum. There’s a very slight peak at the center and it’s not perfectly flat which is what I made. Who would notice? Nobody. Who cares? Me!:scholar: So I set out to make the corrections to the heater plenum and make it not only more correct in design, but also functional. Does anybody know what time it is? It’s HEATER BOX PLENUM TIME!!!:headbang:
Step one was to get the plenum onto the work bench.
237313
237314
I then formed a top piece and added that to get my slight peak that the original has. Too steep and it wouldn’t look right. Too shallow and it would be a waste. This came out perfect! I then positioned this where the cowl opening was to measure for the rear of the plenum.
237315
237316
Then I added the other curved parts to make sure the plenum lines up with the cowl opening.
237317
237318
237319
237320
237321
After I got the plenum all assembled, I then positioned it back on the cowl and figured out the distance between the cowl intake opening and the plenum opening. There’s a gap between the two that’s connected by a rubber seal. Also, the intake in the cowl is smaller than the intake on the plenum. This is compensated by a block off plate that covers the remained of the opening on the bottom of the plenum.
237321
237322
So that’s the construction of the assembly. Now it’s onto to making it functional! I know….whoda thought this much would go into a heater box!:eek2:

Up next, functionality. I need an internal door to block off the fresh air if I need to. Which I find funny since this is a convertible and I doubt I’ll ever had the top up. But, everything has to work and I can’t have a box that’s just there and not have it work!:hmmm::no:
The door is cable actuated and mounted inside the plenum via a bar which the door is welded to. I formed the arm and then installed a few beads on the blocker door for rigidity. Nobody will see it, but I want it to look good in case I’m ever up for the elusive “Best Heater Blocker Door” award. The door arm rides on nylon bushings with a brass insert which should provide years of trouble free operation.
237325
I then positioned the door inside which allowed me to trace the pattern onto the plenum so I could install the weather striping seal.
237324
237323
237326
237327
The result is a lever operated door that seals the incoming air when needed. :headbang::headbang:
Here’s it is in position with the updated cowl intake which is now identical to the factory intake inlet.:scholar:

237331
The 507 as we know it now went through a few design changes until the final design was chosen. My build is compromised of many makes and model parts, and would you believe, part of an airplane? :naughty:
The grab handle on the dash is something I took a little artistic interpretation in. I had replaced the yokes on my 1947 Stinson 108-2 and used the end of one of the old ones as the grad handle. :headbang:

The fuel filler door is cut out and functional now too. The door is spring loaded shut. I will install a keyed cam lock that will keep it tamper proof and latched as well. It’s held against the body nicely with the spring loaded hinge though. Small projects like this really question my sanity in building this:frown:. You guys are awesome! Tuesday was a productive day for 507 stuff. I flew up to Philly to check on the progress of my gas tank and visit two 507 owners and see their cars. One was restored many years ago and the other is about ready for paint. That car is the one that I got all the measurements from last year to accurately build my chassis.
238200
238201
A few details I need to add to mine are the front jack lifting point on the front crossmember. It’s a “V” with a small pad on the base. Next to that is a factory tie down for shipping. Also, heat shielding on the exhaust.
238205
238206
238207

Here’s the tank with internal baffling. It’s just about done.

The problem is these were all hand made cars and no two are similar. If you stare a pictures long enough, you’ll see a tail light maybe too low between left and right, headlight maybe a tad high, etc. Much like early Jags. As such, no hardtop will fit any other car other than the one it was made for. Now, we’re not talking drastic differences, but a slight gap and it’s rain city!

I followed that case for the Jag, but it appears JLR is going a bit nuts on the whole replica thing as rumors are out that they destroyed a very well known replica (1 of 10 made) that THEY own themselves. The assumption behind it is they can’t go after someone with a replica if they themselves have and make them too.:bs: They already make replicas/continuations. But I agree, I’m safe since this is for me and I have no plans on making another, let alone another for sale. I believe that was the whole issue with that case much like the Mercedes Gullwing saga years ago. No, they just want to give you the opportunity to fully and completely incriminate yourself without having to pay the money to serve you with a subpoena.
As your semi-unofficial consigliere, may I suggest you put all your updates in quotes and start every entry with "Allegedly".
That should fix it. This way they will surely see that it is all a work of fiction and this is all the latest ChatGPT version of resto-re-creationism. :naughty:
I doubt BMW USA or BMW AG will come after you. But... you should know that neither BMW CCA nor BMW Classic CCA are officially affiliated with BMW or BMWNA.
It has been something like 30 years ago that BMW NA (I think they have since become BMW USA) insisted that the original BMWCCA moniker be changed to add a space between "BMW" and "CCA".
All I am saying is that an endorsement by BMWCCA, BMW CCA or BMW Classic CCA does not guarantee that neither BMW USA or BMW AG will object to your build. God forbid.

Thanks guys! Very happy it for now. I turned my attention to the engine and decided to make stock stamped steel covers look like cast aluminum BMW covers. Sounds easy, right? :hmmm: Actually, it doesn't. :eek2:
I had my neighbor print out the letters in high temp plastic and then glued them to the covers. The stock Olds covers have several reliefs in them which I had to smooth over first. Once that was done and the letters in place, I used a brush and blotted the letters with 4:1 fill primer. Once satisfied all the print lines were covered and hidden, I sprayed a couple heavy coats for uniformity. The last coat I lowered the PSI and loaded up the material. That created a very rough orange peel and once sprayed with cast aluminum paint, it matched the look I was going for. I mean, if there's one thing I can do it's spray orange peel!!:rolleyes2:

Crazy question Dave, but shouldn't the other valve cover have the logo and numbers going the opposite direction so the breather holes on both are facing the front of the engine when installed? I'm no OldsmoBileMW aficiando but enquiring minds want to know.

Good eye, Steve-a-Reeno!:eek2:
The problem is, left and right covers are not the same. One has a breather port that sticks up 2” or so. The other is for the PCV and flush. I used both flush mounted covers and therefore, only option when swapping L to R is to have the hole offset. I could have relocated the hole and baffle, but that would take time away from building the frame and all the other junk and stuff like that!:scholar::burnout:

In keeping with the original plan of using parts that are similar but not exact due to outrageous costlyness, my Rudge knock-off wheel simulation uses something you'd not expect to find on a car. Some say this car will have everything but the kitchen sink in it! Well, that's partly true now except it's not the sink we're talking about, but what goes in it. A pot! :hmmm:
Let's face it, when my brain starts a stormin', who knows what's going to come out of it. I started with a 7" sauce pan and cut it down to size.
240856
240857
This fits the wheel center perfectly and the height allows clearance for the lugs.
240858
240859
I had an idea for the rivets of the center hub so I enlisted my help of my neighbor who printed off a rivet ring in the exact dimension I needed.
240860
240861
And once all painted and assembled, the spinner will hold this on and simulate the Rudge wheel.
240862
There will be in internal ring around the center opening to prevent the spinner from crushing the dome, but it'll only be hand tight anyway since it's just holding the cover on and not the wheel. A cool and fun side project that I just get so excited over when they come out correctly, like the valve covers! :headbang: So I guess this is a literal "knock-off" wheel. Get it? I know, terrible.
Undercoating in the wheel wells.
240863
And lastly, some ancilliaries mounted in the engine bay: Regulator, relays, fuse panel, washer bottle and washer motor. Incidentally, these are all correct in appearance and location as original!

Who owns this car now?
A12pilot
05-26-2023, 01:39 PM
Jack Castor owned it and worked a deal with BMW to take it and restored it with the caveat they restored his other one as well. Vids on YouTube of the restoration is this car and it now resides in the BMW museum in Germany. Jack passed on and never saw the final restoration. The other car is owned by a good friend of his. Incidentally, I bought reproduction tail light housings from him which were in Castor’s estate. Those were manufactured by Herman and Gerhardt Bold who owned three 507s and were very active in the 507 world in the 70s/80s. The “Pontiac Blue” 507 that just sold for $2.3mil one of theirs. The other was a Black one that sold at Hershey the year before for $1.7mil. The last of the three Bold 507s is being restored and it’s the one I visited to get my measurements from. Albert and I talk frequently and I visited him the other day while checking out my gas tank and visiting another 507 in the area. He’s very interested in my 507 build and loves following along!

So trim panel time! Behind the rear seat is a package tray where the tops rests upon when folded down. This is just light plywood which will be covered by the upholstery shop when the time comes
240891
Here it is finished and the quarter side shields in place to. All will be upholstered.
Below is the heater box in place along with the wiper transmission and defroster vents.
240892
240893
I'll create a duct work to separate the left and right foot well vents as well as a plenum for the defroster. The levers are MGB levers which I'll cut and modify to fit in the factory opening on the dash
240894
240895
Wiper function testing! Everything works as it should. Sweep range is good, intermittent, low, high. I used tape on the knobs to simulate the arms so I could monitor direction.
240896
And here are the ancilliaries mounted on the right engine beam. All in the correct spot and are correct per the 507.

A radio, while not necessary, was on the list of things to do. And since I was knee deep into wiring, might as well work on that today!
I combined parts from a correct Becker-Mexico one with a modern Retro-Sound which gives the best of both worlds.
241180
241181
Here you can see the aftermarket bezel, the factory correct original bezel along with the mounting plate. I'm going to use the original bezel and somehow modify it to include the lower tuner switches belie the dials too.
241182
I trimmed the mounting tabs and surprisingly, the original steel mounting plate fits the Retro ratio perfectly! But seeing as how the original radio I had was for a Mercedes 190SL and this is meant as a replacement, I guess it makes sense it would fit.
241183
241184
241185
I gutted the original seek bar to slip over the tuner buttons. I also mounted the turner switches below the knobs as well
241186
241187
Add the Ivory knobs and we are petty much 100% accurate yet its 6lbs lighter. Blue-toof, Sirumous Radio, and Aux inputs to boot!
Yes that's a lot of work for a radio, but that's half the fun!
More to come...

Thanks guys!! I spent yesterday fabricating the exhaust shielding. The factory shielding which is originally an asbestos material and keeps the exhaust heat from radiating until the cabin and follows the path of the exhaust along the floors. There's an air gap between the floor and the panel. Not wanting to mess with that junk, I took a page from the Book of Old Hotrodding and used cement board coated in BBQ high temp paint.
241395
241396
241397
241398
241399
241400
241401
241402
After fitment, there's a 1/4" gap between the floor pan and heat shielding and they'll be about an inch between pipe and shielding. Should be nice and cool with no radiant heat.
Another detail to mimic what the factory did which nobody will see, care about, or comment on! I think I've entered into the "obsessive compulsive crazy" aspect of this build, so why not more details to make this thing over the top accurate?:dunno::biggthumpup::hmmm:

Radiator is in along with upper and lower hoses, front brake lines run, and I'm working on the mounting bracket for the dual electric fans. The 507 had an option of a "Tropical Cooling Kit" which used dual Jaguar electric fans to supplement the engine fan. I upgraded those to bigger CFM yet they retain the stock look. More on that later.
242439
In fun news, Here's the knock-off knock-offs! Very happy with it. There's a ring that the lugs pass through which has the center post welded to it. The cap goes over that post and is sandwiched to the wheel byb the spinner. The tire shop will put these center adapters on the balancer for me so there's no weird wobble or out of balance issues at speed.

BMW added a "tropicalized" electric fan upgrade which used the fans from a Jaguar for better cooling for higher ambient temperature areas. Hi Mark,
As Lee pointed out, I’ll summarize. I chatted with the gal at the DMV and basically I fill out out the forms and show pictures of the car along with receipts to them at the DMV. A trooper comes an out to verify it’s actually a car and that it’s functional and nothing is stolen. I then get a VIN number assigned and off to the weigh station for a weight and inspection station for a safety inspection verifying everything works for the year it’s being registered as. Once all complete, they give me a blue Texas title that says 1959 BMW 507. But the top of the title includes Replica so you know it’s not a real one. Cobras, other kits cars, they all have the same process but they usually have a Certificate of Origin from the manufacturer eliminating a few of the steps I need to go through. But since I’m the “factory” in this case, a few extra paperwork hoops.
I met the trooper that’s going to do the inspection and he owns a cobra. Pretty cool! He saw my photos and said !”Yeah, this should be an easy one!” So that was flattering!
Cheers
Dave
Dave, they check VIN's if any of the components you used have them. In your case, I don't think any of your components have VIN's from other cars. I believe the receipts determine the licensing value of your car. My guess is they don't account for your labor and in this case that is good as you won't be taxed on your labor.

Right, Tim! That’s why I have the receipts to the major parts (trans, rear, engine) all showing any serial numbers and whom I acquired them from. Trooper told me he was already satisfied with what I told him I had in relation to paperwork.
Tax….Yeah, which leads me into the next decision as to how much to insure it for when the time comes as it’s not a pile of scrap anymore and will soon be a legal and legit car!:3gears::cool2::biggthumpup:
I guess a call to Tami at MK to discuss will be in order. No idea what type of value to put on it.:dunno: Maybe $25,000?

Don't you have at least that in parts ? Stuff you've had printed and custom made can't be cheap, not to mention a number of flights to the east coast for research and to bring back irreplaceable parts you couldn't risk being lost or damaged...

The body is all steel.
Well, then "Ain't that almost the truth."

Still, much better than a fiberglass replica body.

So, this is an interesting discussion since I am at a crossroads with that. The original plan was Silver Blue/Dark blue. That changed to Charcoal/Red. Then it changed again to Feather White/Blue. So now I am leaning on a very dark gray/blue and saddle combo. So basically at this point and to answer the question…..I dunno! Here is some of my likes that I have seen that catch my eye:
242769
242770
242771
242772
242773
242774
BTW….hand made cars. If you have a critical eye like I do, look at the body side spear on this unrestored one above. Look at the transition to the door. I’ve also seen tail lights offset and not symmetrical. Because mine is perfect….HAHAHAHAHAHA!! Holy crap I’m funny!!!
The one with the white walls is from the Pray collection and is stunning in person with that red interior. Not a factory color. Been struggling to find a color that matched and then it hit me: it’s Amazon Blue! Same color as their delivery trucks! Well, pretty close to it, anyway, and offered on the Mercedes trucks.
Of course, white/blue is stunning too on these cars. But the “wow” pop of the dark Graphite/Red can’t be ignored. We’ll see. Everything needs to be painted so a color change isn’t a big deal.

I'll throw in my unsolicited and useless opinion, so I vote for the charcoal over red combination. IMHO, that looks like the richest combo of the above.
In any case, I'm sure yours will be far more aligned and perfected than the OG ones.

Informational poll?:hmmm: I love those! Ok, possibly
Dolomite und Rot (dark gray and red) is a winner amongst many when I show them that picture. It’s stunning in person too. That color with a cognac interior is also pretty classy.
242776
But I saw that color combo (red interior) in real life and it stopped me in my tracks
I know, Joe. I usually have this all down and decided, and I did, but then I changed my mind. So basically, the two colors original in my plan were that Graphite and Silver Blue (shades equal to those). My 63 is silver blue and I don’t want two of the same color cars. I am with all you guys on that color with a red interior is pretty slick and on that Slabside it’s killer. If I were to build a Cobra, that’s what it would be.
I’m leaning back on the Dolomite (Graphite) and Red inside, black top.:biggthumpup:

Nine times out of ten, the first thought you have in your head is usually the best choice. Whatever you pick Dave, it's going to be awesome.
Personally (not that any one gives a rat's a$$), I think Silver or White exterior really show off the lines of the 507 better than any other colors. Silver with a hint of blue would be good too. In the 80s BMW made a bunch of silver blue cars with darker blue interiors (not quite a Navy, but pretty dark). One of my favorite combos.
As for interior, I just do not like red interiors. I know they are hugely popular, but they just make me cringe.
Given how true to an original you have made the body, I think it would be a shame to use a color combo that was not offered from the factory.

I like the bluish gray one with the red interior and silver wheels the best but those huge white walls don't do it any favors. I don't think you can go wrong Dave, it's going to be stunning no matter which combination you choose.
FWIW(not much), I love red and saddle interiors in leather or vinyl but don't care for them at all in cloth for some reason.

Thanks guys for the thoughts. I value everyone’s opinions as they are good to hear and provide help no matter how small it may be. Plenty of time to decide. I’ve been looking at new cars and when I see a color that resembles an original hue I take note for future reference. The steel blue in that first photo is harder to match than you may think. Most are also resprays in BC/CC and are not true to original color. I’d rather not due a metallic color or if it is, very, very fine like the more pastel looking blues/grays on the modern cars have. I don’t think the heavy flake of modern metallics does justice to the lines.

If you are looking for a really bright silver that pops (with a red interior, of course) look at the Polaris Silver of the late 1970's early 1980's. I had a 1981 635CSI grey market car that looked incredible in that color. It really showed off the body lines perfectly.

Just to muddy the waters further for you Dave, I had a 944 like the one below and Sapphir Blau was a great color, and since Charley put up that 911 with the red interior, I thought I'd add that as well, and for the finale, the Special Edition 911 in burgundy and tan interior is just an extra possibility. :)

We’re inching closer to the finish line! Well, we’re several thousand feet away and I don’t see any banners or anything. So nevermind. But forward progress the last few days! Driveshaft slipped right in so now everything is connected front to back. What’s left underneath here? Exhaust, emergency brake cables, rear axle brake lines.

Under the hood I started thinking about my remote oil filter set up and while I like it since it looks identical to what the 507 has, I don’t like the small oil lines designed for a small straight six. So I ordered a regular V8 remote oil filter and installed that low in the engine bay below the battery tucked up on the inner frame rail. Easy to get to and change the oil if that ever needs to be done. The original remote oil filter I was going to use will stay there and look the part but be non-operational.

Bumper time! 507 bumpers are, how should we say, pretty rare to come across and they don’t make them aftermarket. But I did find a set of 503 bumpers which are similar and I figured I could make them work. These are custom made when ordering so I altered the front bumper’s width and that worked out well. Just fabricated brackets and it mounted right up! Very happy with it.

The rear was going to take some modification to fit. I placed it in position and then decided how much I needed to chop out of the center to shorten it to the body dimension. I removed about 3” from the center. I tack welded it together making sure the reflection had continuity so when rechromed, there’s no wave or distortion showing where I made the slices. First up was to mount the license plate light and trunk bezel.

The sides on the 503 bumper are too long and almost touch the wheel openings. I needed to make those shorter but with that comes a problem. Shortening them too much results in too much a difference in material between the end piece and the fatter part by the curve. I needed to find a nice balance between those two parts which also resulted in the bumper not being so long on the quarter panel side. Once I figure that out, time to cut!
I tacked the ends in place and then trimmed the remaining excess to form a smooth transition between each part. I noticed that after placing it against the body after the mods, it was still a tad too wide. I sliced out another 1” in the center and then welded it back up.
PERFECT!!!!! Rear bumper brackets get fabricated tomorrow and then it’ll be onto the exhaust over the weekend. I wanted to get the rear bumper on before I started on the exhaust so I could make sure the tail pipes have proper spacing and clearance.
More to come!!!!
