I'm going to look at a 68 Chevelle possibly this weekend that a local guy just bought. He thinks it may be a Baldwin car. He sent a few pics. It does have the Hone O Drive Unit. I'm doing some research as to what to look for. Can any of you guys give me a heads up on clues to look for. I'm not looking at it to buy it. I'm just trying to help a fellow Chevelle owner out and help him verify what he has before he tears it apart. From pics I've seen it's a very nice barn find. It also has the Buick interior in it. Any help you guys can give me would be appreciated.

buick interior is common in a 68...ive seen a dozen or so in the last year..in ruff parts cars..

Order the NCRS shipping report for $50. If it comes back to Baldwin Motor Co. that's a good start. Other than that, not much to go on as the hone overdrive wasn't used until very late '69 cars and mostly in 1970 and later.

Learned something already. Didn't know the OD units weren't used until late 69.
I'm not expecting it to be a real one but you never know. He may be basing it on the OD unit and a story. I just wasn't sure if there were some tell tale signs to look for.

anything can happen in 50 years..someone could have put the H O D in after delivery..stranger things have been discovered..go in with open eyes, expect little and hope for BIG is how i'd approach it.

Put eyes on the car today. What he has is a very restorable numbers matching L78 68 Chevelle with a couple of desirable day 2 speed parts on it. Motor rebuilt but not to L78 Specs. Numbers matching 4 speed 12 bolt rearend.
Unfortunately he is convinced it's a Baldwin Motion car. I'm convinced it's not. There is no paperwork of any kind and other than the overdrive unit not much to associate it with Motion. The car is for sale but the price he gave me was already to high then he tells me since it's a motion car he wants even more for it but wouldn't say how much more. So if any of you get wind of a supposed motion Chevelle in mid Michigan message me I'll give you my take.

Order the NCRS shipping report and it will likely put the BM story to rest.

Others can speak up w/ better info but at least one '68 'Velle got a 427 by Motion also was later turned into a race car.
No idea whether the below Cars Magazine article car is it or another?:hmmm:
The NCRS report is surely the best start, good luck!

The car is a red black vinyl top black Buick bucket seat interior. 4 speed With original drivetrain. Would be a great car to restore. It needs zero panel replacement. But owner/flipper is seeing $$$$$ because he's convinced himself it's a B/M car.

Enter Joel Rosen? $2,500-3,000 could turn into a great return.

Did Baldwin Chevelles cars come from Framingham or Baltimore? What does the cowl tag say?

....and he's probably seen enough instances where, if you tell the same story long enough and convincingly enough, some fool will come along and - literally - buy into the story.

It's a Kansas car. Like I said it's not a B/M car. It's a shame he won't be realistic with price I'm sure one of you guys would do it justice. If done my share of them but steer away from projects this big.

It is a nice car but it needs a frame off job done to it. It's scaly underneath has a couple paint jobs on it. Just not economically feesable to pay what he wants.

Looks like he got the NCRS report. Not shipped to Baldwin or even New York. Like I thought it's a real L78 that needs restoration with some period correct motion parts.

Looks like the NCRS shipping report came back as not even being sold in NY, as per the owner.

Still RPO for '68 but Copo 9511 necessary to get 4:56 or deeper for '69 model year cars.

Where did you see it for sale?

Brucebodyman
07-03-2018, 11:55 PM
I found it on EBay. Man I was shocked when I saw that price. ITs way more than what he told me. What he didn't show in pics were floors. They're solid but complete scale and pitted. Needs lower qtr patches. Car needs a frame off job done to it. No way is it gonna clean up and drive the way it is. It would be possible to do that but you wouldn't have a very nice car.

Instead of being reasonable making a few bucks on it and passing it on to somebody that can do the car justice it will sit some more. What a shame.

I didn't get the vin. I inspected car new what it was asked how much and he was so far off on price and so positive he had a motion car and there was no telling him different so I left.

I'm not sure about that, Pete.....I've seen what appeared to be credible pictures of a 69 Chevelle L78 that came from the factory with a 4.56 rear axle.

Not saying you couldn't get it Bill, it was available but Copo 9511 necessary for '69 cars.
A few existing '69 4:56 also 4:88 cars w/ original paperwork are known and sure enough, the 9511 is indeed noted.
We went through it here a few times over the years also more info has come to light on other sites since too so best Google around and you'll see it's true.

Woops, had my COPO orders mixed up....thought 9511 was one of the 427 cars.

I found an old thread on here about it, but the more I read, the more confusing it became, so I gave up...….

Doesn't Joel Rosen offer a verifying service for Motion cars? Not sure how expensive he is but I do remember reading somewhere that he validates legit Motion cars.

Yes, there is a verification service, however, it's clear based on NCRS shipping documents, this car wasn't shipped to Baldwin Chev. or any other new car dealer in NY. Would be a waste of money. Best case, IMO this car had some Motion catalog parts put on it at some point in it's life. Doesn't help the value of the car IMO.

Seems to be a decent '68 L-78 Chevelle, but not worth anything remotely close to asking price.

L78 car for sure. BM not in a million years. Looks identical to mine which has the Buick interior. His price is well let's say way out there in neverland. Even if it had motion stuff bought and put on it means nothing really unless it was a shipped to BM and a full conversion was done.

I also noticed no mention off motion parts. So the parts that made it very desirable don't go with car. My guess is they will pop up on eBay.
