Looking for a Burnished Brown 69 Z that a friend had in the 1980's. Lloyd Stauffer (spelling?) was his name and he was killed in a dealership service department fire when the trouble light bulb broke when he was pulling a gas tank. Always wondered what happened to his car.

There is/was a burnished brown Z in the town next to me. The guy rarely takes it out and has had it since the 1980's or '90's. About 50 miles north of Dayton. I'll see if I can find out if he's still got it.

No kidding...I've had a run on replacing fuel pumps lately on my newer stuff. I won't be doing it at night anymore. What a bad way to go.

That's just terrible. I remember looking at a 63 Vette with my dad when I was a teenager. The price was really good. The wife ordered the husband to sell it because the same kind of accident occurred. He survived the fire but was badly burned. As a result she wanted the "cursed" car gone.

What a sad situation for everyone and sorry you lost your friend.
Was the car maybe an RS w/ 54,000 miles?
Here's a newspaper article about the fire also an ad for a 69 RS Z-28 that closely fits the timeline.
:hmmm:

It’s a bit fuzzy, but pretty sure not an RS. I remember it having Super Tricks or Centerlines on it. He loved that car and can’t recall him ever running it hard. Always at the cruise nights. A real nice guy. Whoever got that car got a real plum. To this day when I work on my car I am always looking at flammables and moving them away.

Thanks Pete for the postings. I had that same article clipped but can't find it.

Same thing happened back when I worked at dealerships as a kid. Gasoline on a trouble light started a large fire. Luckily he only suffered minor burns as other mechanics quickly jumped in to help. So no one seriously injured. For years after I never understood why they continued to use those incandescent trouble lights when the fluorescents hit the market. After that I quickly took all my incandescent trouble lights in my shop and hung them on the wall as antiques and replaced with fluorescents.

Good luck in your search.

Back in the late 80s a buddy of mine was just finishing off a frame off resto on his 63 split window. The gas gauge didnt work so he pulled down the fuel tank and went in for the night. The next day he went out to work on it when he opened the garage door some how the metal rollers sparked and the whole garage went up. The split window his other 65 Vette and the garage burned to the ground.

I threw away my last Edison Bulb trouble light last week. That's all I had growing up and I probably blew more bulbs in those things alone than all the blown bulbs in every house I ever lived in. Now I feel much safer with florescent and LED bulbs. My 20 dollar box fans in the garage are probably not much safer when it comes to gas fumes... Good luck with the Camaro search

Wasn't exactly my intention when starting this thread, but if even one of the folks reading it changes bulbs and it saves them then its worth it and adds some significance to my friends untimely passing.
I'm not really looking to purchase the car (wish I had the budget for it), just curious as to its whereabouts and hope it went to someone who appreciates it as much as Lloyd did.

Wow and how many times I have done that! I quit using them long ago after hearing some of those stories I hate even hearing this stay safe always think ahead safety first. Hell I even carry fire extinguishers in all my cars.

Wonder where it was sold? I heard a rumor of one not far from there but never have seen it.
