Original 3.31 gear? I don't think so with an L78

Standard gear on a L78 was a 3.73, 3.31 was optional.

It may have been optional, but how likely with an M21?

I thought that also, but I think he was referring to KK tach as a knee knocker tach.

That's how I read it.

The way I read the ad, I doubt that it's an original L78 car, just happens to have a 1970 vintage L78 in it now, so the 3.31 gear is probably original to the car.

I thought the same. He doesn’t say that it was originally an L78, but says he has a dated block so makes it sound like it was. I really like the car... no matter what the original hp!

What’s a ‘66 Chevelle SS wearing original black paint and non-original drivetrain worth?

I have an original l78 block for 1966 Chevrolet. Dated May 1966. Standard bore. $1800.00

Cool car, although the rear being jacked up to clear the 3" pipes spoils the look for me. Most likely not a real L78 with an 01A cowl tag date, the 6K redline tach may have been added along with other L78 specific parts. 2Q indicates M21 so it was at least an L34 360 HP. Paint is a bit rough but what's not to like about a AA code black '66 SS, wouldn't surprise me if it has already changed ownership.

The car is sold. The owner of the car had contacted me awhile back about it. Not a real L78 car, tach was added, rear end are factory 3.31 and m-21 block is from 70. neat solid fast car, paint was a 6-7 but hey black/Black 4 speed pretty cool!

Con VIN stamped on it's 1970 L-78 engine block is 131778.Owner wouldn't divulge any more.
The fact that they only produced the 1970 L-78 Chevelle/Elco for a brief time very early during 1970 production,it has to be from either the Kansas City Leeds plant,(K),or Van Nuys assembly plant,(L),or a 1970 L-78 Nova @ Willow Run,(W).
1970 Camaro VINs started @ 500000,so that rules it out.

I went and looked at it yesterday. The L78 currently in it is from a Nova. Cool car but needs a lot of cosmetic work.
