Recently, my wife and I have started a new chapter (adventure). I sold my parts business and semi retired. We picked up root and are in the process of moving to our home in northern Wisconsin (love to snowmobile).

So, our old house is sold (6 days). That mean time to get going on the new shop. 40x56 steel building............radiant heat floors.............high ceilings.............a hoist....... and more room for all of our stuff. I now can keep it call in one place!

The push is on the get the site cleared and prepped, in order to pour concrete this year

Off we go! I suspect the fill is going to be a killer.

They got back on things here this week. I believe we got about 5" of rain, so the excavator had to pull off for a week. Looks like site prep will be done this week and should be ready for concrete towards the end of next week.

Isn't it amazing how fast those buildings go up ? We moved in Sept of '19 and had a 30X48 contracted for October. We had a month of rain then too and it got delayed until November. When the material got here, it took 2 guys 3 DAYS and it was done, except for the overhead door. CRAZY what they did in 3 days.

Thanks for posting the pictures of your shop build. Did you go with a 6" slab throughout or only where you planned to have lifts? What side wall height did you go with? Also, do you plan to treat the concrete floors with epoxy or some other coating?

Any lessons learned from the shop build that you would do differently today if starting over?

It took about 4 months quite honestly. As luck would have it, my contractor was not the best by far......

Happy with the building for the most part, but the process left an awful lot to be desired.

6 inch slab throughout. If I put a lift in this building, it would be just a 4 post that I would not anchor (I have my other shop for wrenching). 14' walls and I don't know that I would necessarily go that high again. Given what my intended purpose is here, I am doing nothing but heating thin air and adding to the acoustics. I like a lower ceiling as a rule just because it feel cozy.

I left the floors alone (aside from sealing the concrete) due to the carbides on the snowmobile skis. Tracey and I ride a fair amount so we are in and out of the shop in the winter time and the sleds would raise hell with any sort of premium flooring.

I keep my personal cars in this building, wash our personal trucks, and a place to hang and have a couple of :beers:

You should get/make some skates for under the skis and track that you slip on right inside the door. I used them when I had sleds and it's so nice to be able to push the sled sideways into a spot against a wall. Now they hold the plow and I can push that into a corner, when not in use.

My building is just a shell, no windows or inside finish work, so very basic. The guys loved it, as it was the last one for the season and didn't take a lot of time. Concrete was poured the next year.

Yours sitting over a winter from the mason delay was, probably, a positive as you had a LOT of fill and it helps settle and compact it even more than the vibrator did.

Looks good Tim! Couple questions, how far is it to walk from the house to the barn? And did you do a full plumbing in the barn bathroom etc.?

Looks good Tim! Couple questions, how far is it to walk from the house to the barn? And did you do a full plumbing in the barn bathroom etc.?

It's about 50 ft Bary. There is water out there plumbed from the house (wanted soft water for washing cars) but no bathroom. Where it is located on the lot, a holding tank (which is the only way I'd do a shop bathroom around here) just had no place to go. There is a PVC pipe that drains outside for washing cars and a slop sink for washing hands in the mechanical room (that also drains into the PVC). While we are on 6 acres, the topography dictates an awful lot to say nothing for the proximity of the lake.

The building is 40'x56'. 14' walls with a 4/12 pitch. The garage door is 14' wide by 12' high......2' overhangs. The floor is 6" 7 bag mix as is the flat work in the porch area. I cannot remember the service coming in but I believe it is 200 amp. I added a Generac generator just incase we lose power for multiple days from an ice storm.
