I couldn't post this in the 'ads seen' section, but I wanted to share something i found on Hemmings. '70 Cyclone Spoiler with the drag pack in competition blue with a white vinyl top. It's a combo I've never seen, but I like it. I'm a sucker for Mercurys anyway.

The 429/460 engines looks so much bigger when they are in a small engine compartment.

Coincidentally, the "Big" red carpet feature display for 2019 will have high performance CJ and SCJ Mercury's on the left, Boss Mustangs on the right!

I spoke to the orig. owner today. Kinda funny as he just made a offer on a house yesterday, the address was 429 and he thought about the car. Said he would beat all the GTO's in town. They had 1/4 marked off on a local street. He also raced it at a track in Salt Lake but when he put headers on it the wouldn't let him run. He sold it to a kid in Ca. that was going to put it back stock. When he sold it to the kid it had headers, scatter shield and Cragars. Still has the scattershield. He ordered it and got it in 70, sold it in 76. He has pics but they are in storage.

Charley Lillard
12-31-2018, 12:44 AM
It currently has incorrect wheels. I can either go Cragars, leave existing rims on it or try to find correct rims. Correct rims I'm told are very hard to find.

Very nice Cyclone, this car originally came with 14x7'" steel wheels with trim ring and caps. The 1970 5 slot "styled sport wheels" were an option and would be listed on the Marti report.
The Cyclone Spoilers also had trunk prop rods like the Boss 302 Mustangs that ordered with rear spoilers.
Also, If they had come with the 4.30 Detroit locker, Mercury Division lists this option as "Super Drag Pack" which is kinda cool to see that on a Marti report.

The lower pic that Lee posted is the first time I have seen a rim that might match my spare. Spare has never been mounted and if you compare the center caps they mount differently. 429 SCJ you are the closest expert in the room ?

Charley Lillard
12-31-2018, 02:12 PM
What I'm guessing is the orig. carb was in the trunk with a new float bowl added. The old bowl was also there.

Charley Lillard
12-31-2018, 02:13 PM
429SCJ where do these tags go ?

big gear head
12-31-2018, 03:08 PM
The lower tag goes on the rear end, but doesn't seem to match your gear ratio. It shows a 9 inch rear end with a 3.50 gear and Traction Lock differential. I believe your car has a 3.91 gear, so this tag would be from another car. Check your rear end and see if it still has the tag on it.

429scj
12-31-2018, 03:45 PM
Carb is correct just need a Ford front bowl, the top tag is correct too 829A for a 429 SCJ "C" Code. All 429 1970 Cyclone Spoilers were C code, not "J" even though it was a Ram Air car, weird how Mercury did things. Big Gear Head is correct the bottom axle tag is not correct it would have a 3L91 not 3L50.

Charley Lillard
12-31-2018, 04:10 PM
I have the front bowl.

Judging by your spare and the build sheet, it looks like the car had the basic 14x7" steel wheels with conventional pop-on hubcap and trim ring. The hubcap is a later version of the '63-'64 era Mercury cap but simpler, stamped without "Mercury" lettering. I assume the wheel is the same as found in '70 Mach 1 Mustangs of that year. The 14x7 "Styled Steel Wheel" option was listed at $36.90. It was a new design with 5 slots versus the 12 slot '68-'69 14"x6" wheel your car seems to be fitted with. Center cap design was the same, snapping to the inside of the recessed bolt circle as opposed to outside the nubs of the conventional steel wheel. These wheels were also offered as a no cost option on 1970 Mach 1 Mustangs for just that year but continued to be offered by Mercury on Cougars in 1971. (Last photo is a '63/'64 era Mercury scripted cap of mine mounted on a Rocket chrome reverse wheel just for reference)

steve honnell had a cyclone spoiler identical color to this one back in the late 80's. he offered it to me at a bargain price but I was buying a trans am he owned and only had a single car trailer. I always wished I had went home and turned around and went back for it.

Same wheels used on the Cougar????

Not quite-all 1970 Cougar Eliminators got 14x6" wheels, 1970 Cyclone received 14x7" wheels. Caps are the same but trim rings are likely different? You can see the caps sit deeper inside the dish of the Cyclone rims in pictures. I know Mustangs had 14x7 in Mach 1 and 15x7 on Boss 302/429, but Cougars didn't. Not even Boss 302 powered ones (I do know that the 15" rims and F60-15 tires required an upgraded spindle for the Mustang to pass Ford's durability tests). Ford and Mercury did things differently on many details in that era, I've learned never to assume anything.

That is really , really nice.. Set screw T handle, correct air cleaner snorkel, and you put the SCJ only smog on it too! Overspray on the floor is nice! The interior looks excellent... SCJ 4 speed vacuum advance too !! Bravo..
