Seems like the engine/trans also perhaps rear axle may be replacements w/ auction description using the word 'original' frequently to describe almost everything but the 'clearly stamped' drivetrain components also the reworked/rebuilt by previous owner thing too.:hmmm:

No. But there has never been any supporting documentation specifically to the existence of a 455 in 1970 being built to RAIII or RAIV specs. It does not exist. This car is a basic 1970 455 GTO, nothing more. The real performance leader GTO in 1970 was the 400 RAIV, not the 455.

T42 was a hood option and was independent of the RAIII or RAIV options which were only available on the 400 in '70. Here is an excerpt from an article written by Thomas A. Demauro for Hemmings a couple of years ago. This option was available on the L75 455 engine and produced 360 rated HP. The RAIII 400 was rated at 366 and the RAIV 400 was rated at 370. So the guy has a lot of his facts wrong. He's a scammer.


Standard with the D-port 366-hp L74 Ram Air 400 and Round-Port 370-hp L67 Ram Air IV 400 engine options for 1969 and 1970 GTOs, the code T42 Hood Air Inlet could be ordered optionally on the 1970 GTO's D-port L75 360-hp 455 as well.

Car is a 455 HO with the same Ram Air system that was available on the 400 RAIII.

The 70 455HO is a unique creature as the compression was around 10-1/2 to 1. In 1971 the 455 (and everything else in Pontiac land) dropped to around 8-1/2 to 1. So It is a unique engine given it's one-year availability. As you may know, with Pontiacs, the compression ratio is created by the cylinder heads not the pistons. Most of them use the same type of flat top piston with valve reliefs. No domes here. So this engine will have a rather rare set of heads on it with small volume chambers.

All the 70 GTO's with the 455 engine option had the same 'ho' engines. The ram air is just the scoops/hood/cable. No difference in the engine. It did not even have ram air headers. Where as the 71 455 ho engine had many upgrades over the 455 that was in 1970.

For that $57, you got the only 12 bolt that came in a GTO, and 55 more cubes. One of the better deals that not many knew about.

I don't see where he is saying the car was built to RAIII or IV spec? He just says it is a '70 455HO, which it is. And this engine was rated at 370 HP when used in other Pontiac cars for '70.

yes, its a standard 455 with a cold air package. Nothing more. Its NOT a ram air 455. Did not make a Ram air 455 in 1970, like in 71.

The Broadcast sheet from inside the car was in the ad but not the actual PHS sheet from Pontiac Historical, other than a remade window sticker (probably by PHS) which isn't really worth anything for documentation purposes.

The PHS issued version of the broadcast would be the ultimate corroboration of the broadcast sheet in the ad. He should add that to the listing.

Heck, if that was black and red I would have bought it. I still have flashbacks to June 1970 at summer camp when the cool counselor showed up in his brand-new 70 GTO, black with bright red interior and the optional rear wing. I’d love to have that car. Made quite the impression on the 7 year old me. Even more than the tie-dye wearing, lady counselors in their hip hugger, hot pants. :-)

I wonder why it looks like heads from a wrecking yard?#64 heads is what was used on the 70 455HOs.Could be a nice car but dont think you could come out alive after putting it back to even a decent driver condition.Tom

Wasn’t a judge, just a heavily optioned 70 he had ordered from the local Pontiac dealer. The owner was a nice kid from the local farm family in Orange, Connecticut.
