After 39 years and 7 months I will be separating from General Motors. They offered a “package” and I took it.

Last day in the office was February 7th; there will be a period of transition and then I will morph into retirement after that.

I’ll need to find something to do in order to keep the lights on at home but haven’t picked a new direction yet.

Congrats. I retired at 51. I love to work at nothing all day, lol.
There’s a great coffee shop across from M1 on Woodward. Wen it warms up, bring your car, I’ll buy you a coffee.

Keith, I retired January 1 after 40 years in the insurance business, I'm in my early 60's. I'm transitioning my customers to another fellow, but the transition has been uneasy for me. After 40 years of working 40 plus hours per week and bringing home a pay check, it's a very strange feeling not going into work. Keep us posted on how it is going for you.

Congrats Keith! Now you have no excuse for not joining us at MCACN, as you are way overdue.

And if you want to work, we pay next to nothing and work you like a dog for countless hours!

Congrats! Find something you enjoy to do...………...you'll find its not work at all. I had spent 35 years in the automotive parts business. I retired last year @ 50. I'm on the verge of doing something I always wanted to.

Great days are ahead for ya!

But it is the most enjoyable work you will ever do.

I’m almost there as well and I’m curious for those who have retired what do you do for health insurance, and social security? Take it early or wait?

Depends on how early and does your employer now offer health Ins. after you retire? My wife is going to retire at 65 instead of 66. She said its about an 85 dollar a month difference in her SS. She will go back on my healthcare plan as her secondary and take medicare as her primary. My opinion is to take the money when you can get it.

I could retire next year at 49 years old but not 100% certain I will "pull the plug"

Congrats Keith! I have been retired since age 50. The thing I remember saying the most is “How did I get all this stuff done when I had a job?”

Self-employed small business men do not ever get to retire....They just break down to the point you can't work anymore.....

You'll do fine, just keep playing with the cars. I retired at 59 from a great job as a corporate aircraft mechanic in Goodyrear's filight operations (not the Blimps ! )
So for the last 13 years I have been able to stay busy restoring cars I can't afford :biggthumpup: I have had my hands on some very awesome cars, kind off makes up for missing out back in the day.
And I have only missed one MCACN when Dad passed and have made a ton of good friends along the way, it's all about the people.

congrats on retirement. its fantastic. I retired in 2015 after 30 with Verizon. at 53 having nothing to do everyday but going to play in the garage is nice for awhile but having nowhere to go everyday gets old quick. took a part time job with the gas company 3 hrs a day 4 days a week is golden :biggthumpup: enjoy retirement :beers:

I just buy my own HC.
Do it, get the hell out while your still alive. There’s so much to do around the house, you never get done. Then there’s remolding.

for those who have retired what do you do for....social security? Take it early or wait?

Health insurance, there are too many variables for a definitive answer.

Social Security is much easier, just 'do the math'. You will come up with a break-even point, where at a certain age you will start being ahead of the game. No history of longevity of males in my family, so I took it at 62. If I live past 79 1/2, I will start losing money, but if that happens I will have outlived all the other males in my family history by far so I won't care.

Want to thank Keith for taking a look at 2 trucks for me that were for sale in the Detroit area. Not only did he give me the assurance I needed to purchase one of them, he gave me a ride from my hotel to the dealership yesterday to pick it up! Thanks again Keith, I really appreciate it!

All of the sayings are true;

If I had known how much fun this was going to be I would have retired first and then started my career.

Great to hear that Keith. The admin folks round here asked me to ask (tell) you that now that you are retired the members are going to expect you to step up your posts-per-day rate by a significant amount!

:hmmm: :rolleyes2::grin::cool2:

Because I’m close to retiring but still thinking about what I will do to replace the fulfillment I get from working, can you share some details of what you been doing to fill the time? Often times I talk to people that retire and use the first 6 months to a year catching up on all the things they put off only to get bored or go find another job.

They are either really efficient or don't have a very big list? Guess I put off about 25 years of stuff:3gears::no:
