Some of you know that I was recently asked by Dana Mecum and Stevens daughter to assist with the Memorabilia portion of Stevens incredible collection. I just returned after spending the better part of the week, 12-14 hours per day going through it. It was truly an honor and a privilege, but man, my bones and my brain are aching!

ALL of the contents will be offered at Dana Mecums Spring Classic in Indy in May, in a combination of onsite and online lots. I can say that if you see it in the pictures that Charley showed in his posts elsewhere on this site, it will be available.

I set up over 1,000 individual lots of "smalls", 160+ race jackets and a number of larger display items. There are also NOS tires, tire displays and as you can imagine, far more than I can list here.

Many of the larger items are shown on the Mecum site now, with much more being added. It will take at least a week to add the small items, and a considerable amount of additional large items.

I had the honor of getting a personal tour from Steven several times, and even spent some time with Steven in "the attic" and I can tell you, there is far more that had not seen the light of day for many years, along with additional items he had in his NY home that will be offered.

A majority is of course, Mopar, Rapid Transit System, Scat Pack, Ford Performance and Cobra related, but there is also a lot of Hurst items and some random Chevy, Buick and other period items.

If there is one "takeaway" it is that there quite simply is no "burn pile" that is the norm with any large quantity collection. There will be plenty of affordable items and lots, but I can tell you, the quality and the quantity is absolutely staggering. Of course, there is not one single reproduction item, whether big or small.

If you have any interest in this type of stuff, DO NOT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY! The family has no interest in multiple auctions or dragging it out, so the likelihood of another auction is, well...unlikely assuming that all of the items can be categorized in time.

All of the items are being offered with NO RESERVE and the Mecum team is also implementing a brand new online bidding system that will be launched with this collection.

I can not stress it enough...this truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity and a collection of this magnitude being offered all at one time is unheard of. Do Not Miss it! If you are unable to attend in person, register to bid online. There is no charge to sign up to bid on Road Art..

Check the Mecum Auction site on a regular basis for updates, as they are working every day to get it all online. Trust me...it is going to take a while to get it all up there!

Thanks;

Bashton

So that everyone knows, this is just the beginning for the memorabilia lots.

There will be literally over 1,000 more lots added over the next week or so.

There will also be revisions to some of the items that are shown, like the Ford rack that was packed with the Dodge and Plymouth Data and Color and trim books. If you see something that is an obvious mismatch, it will be corrected.

Seriously...what is on the website now is just the beginning of what will be offered.

Steven probably had the largest collection of the printed Mopar stuff in the world. If you want to have the largest collection just buy all of this. I'm sure he had more than Chrysler has.

Ed Meyer knows the exact dates but over 30 years. The bulk was acquired in the first 10.

I wonder how long it took to amass that collection?

The first item I sold to him, (actually two Scat Pack press kits) was over 30 years ago.

While sorting the collectlion, I found both. Steven also showed me the original hand written envelope that I mailed it in when I visited with him shortly before his passing. He said, "hey, I have to show you something." He went over to one of the showcases, shuffled some stuff and pulled it out; "Remember this?" he said with a smile. His memory for acquiring items was absolutely incredible.

I will treasure that memory...

Keep an eye out for a Pistol Grip Shifter I can adapt to my Cutlass. I would love to have a little tribute Mopar part in my Olds.

Yes it is safe to assume all items are original unless specified. Steven was OCD about originality.

There was a sign when you entered at the unveiling of the collection:

Please

DO NOT touch, handle or fondle the memorabilia

NO drinks, food or smoking

NO REPRODUCTION signs or parts permitted beyond this point

At one point a guest took one of the entry forms for a draw that was filled out (from a stack for an original draw) and asked where it should go. Steven said "oh I'll take that". In typical Steven style he just smiled, the person was his guest.....and just didn't understand.

You will not find any reproduction items in this collection. Steven was totally opposed to reproduction memorabilia.

I categorized about 1,000 lots of "smalls" including all of the contents of the showcases, all kinds of literature, 180+ race jackets and way too much more to list. None of this has been listed on the Mecum site yet, but it all will be.

I was telling someone, in the 35+ years of collecting and running a automobilia store for 10+ years, every collection I ever viewed or purchased had three piles when sorted; Prime, Decent and Burn.

There was absolutely no "burn" pile in this collection.

and on the same display i believe the display said "Take One" so 1 of the guests (someone Steve and I know well) who sells on ebay took some so he could sell them on ebay!

When I first met Steven he mentioned that he'd sell his Hemi Cuda……...it had 992.2 miles on it......was a Super Track Pack....I thought he was nuts and bought the car.

Then I asked why the hell would you sell this car.

He replied "if I want one of these I'll just pay a little over the going rate and have my choice and the premium will bring me the pick of the litter...….I just bought this crazy sign and this cut-a-way engine.....find me either one of them"

Steven followed his heart and convictions, he didn't care to be in the spotlight. He was in a league of his own. It was an unprecedented pursuit of originality. How he managed to bring these cars, parts and memorabilia together was incredible to watch.

He was an uncommonly kind and generous man, with a twist.

Godspeed Steven!!!

Can anyone explain why the '69 Mod Top Barracuda went for so high? It's a great car but a price higher than any of the Rapid Transit cars is impressive!

It looked like the classic auction scenario of two people wanting it, badly! It just kept going on and on. At one point the auctioneer yelled out "Go find some of that material (mod top) we're gonna put it on all of the cars!" :)

The guy that won it was the same guy that got all of the cut-away engines too, among other things.

Ed was who told Steven to start collecting all that stuff. We are talking paper materials etc. The stuff that gets thrown away. He didn't really care about neon signs etc because they last forever where the paper stuff falls apart, gets tossed etc. Steven then went on to spending years crawling thru dealership attics etc.

I found it interesting that the buyers premium was 23%!

Mr70

I placed a few bids on some of Stevens stuff, but lost.
While registering to bid,I found out if I won anything sitting at home and bidding through the keyboard,I'd have to pay a 20% buyers fee..(18% if I go and bid in person)
plus a 7% Indiana tax, that EVERYONE has to pay regardless where you live, and a 3% credit card fee if I paid with such,=30% of the amount bid right there.
Plus they have to ship the item to me at their discretion,so there's another significant amount right there too.
I am honestly glad I didn't win anything, but I just had to bid on the stuff I wanted to own.

Somewhere is a thread I posted years ago when Steven had his party and we all finally got to see his stuff on display. Floor to ceiling the walls were full. Prototype (Fred) was one of the idiots that spent days with Steven laying out the posters etc on the floor to mirror just how it would all look on the wall. Then it was all attached to the walls with a ungodly amount of Velcro. How much Velcro was it Fred ?

prototype
05-23-2019, 12:59 PM
Before the Velcro was the plywood.

There was an attempt to hang signs, clocks, etc. Steven got frustrated and had plywood put up over the drywall with plug ins everywhere, then you could hang anything, anywhere without worry of it pulling through the drywall (errrrr sheetrock as Steven called it, I'd never heard it called sheetrock, must be a NY thing).

As the walls were laid out on the floor Steven would be keep asking the size of the open areas and the colours around them and knew in his head of what he had in inventory that would fit in the open space and come out with something that would fit.

The Scat Pack girl with the kite, Sox and Martin drag parachute, 60's music area with orange shag rug and any animated sign made the place special to me.

The first time I went to Stevens house I remember seeing half a dozen cars and a big block Cobra CSX3329, he had an animated neon sign and I was just mesmerized by the reflection of the neon flickering on/off in the paint on the hood. The basement was silent and just hearing the clicking of the sign going on/off was super cool. I sat down on the white shock chairs (which demonstrated a good and bad shock) and almost fell over on the one with a bad shock.....I felt like such a dork.

When he first got the RTS Hemi Road Runner he was wondering how the hell he was going to figure out how to match the paint back to it's former glory. Then the rear spoiler was found preserved in a blanket and had all the original paint and colours on the car, another typical Steven story.

Memories....great memories.
