Saw this at the Mopar Spring Fling. Seller was looking for best reasonable offer, whatever that is. Supposedly a matching number running, driving car and I think it was supposed to be original paint or at least most of it was. I didn't know they offered the D-500 in wagon form. Has to be one of a handful ever made.

I saw that but had no idea it was a D500. Wow!

There were two, actually three, variants of the “D-500”, which confuses pretty much everybody along with the people who designed it. The D-500 was originally designed to be a high performance ground pounder that would outrun anything. The “500” in the D500 was the number that had to be produced for NASCAR qualification rules. It wasn’t for the Indy 500 which is commonly thought. Also, the engine serial numbers are specific to 500s, with them starting at D-500-1001. Only two models; first as a 2 door hardtop and convertible Royal Lancer. Then later, offered in the Coronet line as a 2 door sedan club coupe and a convertible.

Then comes the confusion late 55 for the 56 model year, and that’d be the D-500-1 and D-500 Special. You could order all the options originally slated for the D-500 individually and on all models of the 56 lineup including wagons where as before it was only a “race” package.

So, what you see is yes, it’s a D-500, but not “THE” D500 of original NASCAr intent. Still, a very cool braggin’ wagin’!!,!:3gears::3gears:

I can't say I'm clearer on this.

I think, depending on the year, there were several degrees of D500. And there were some special, under-the radar stuff like D500-1 and D501, perhaps? (the latter being 1956 and '57 respectively).
