Being a '69 w/ L72 4-Spd, it's hard to think of a better B-Body example of the muscle car era?:hmmm:
Amazing it even exists but even better is how it's such a no nonsense original.:worship:
Big congrats Jeff!

What a spectacular example of an incredibly rare high performance car. I think this makes three that we know of. These cars do not get near enough credit and though big still pack plenty of power to compete with many of the cars out there. Congratulations Jeff and thanks for the recent correspondence.

Nice car... 2 questions: is that black painted steering wheel shroud center and black horn buttons original? Would have thought an Impala SS would have a woodgrain shroud. Does the shifter handle not have "Muncie" stamped on the side?
Oh and #3. Is that exhaust original? i was told the tailpipes originally exited right behind the rear wheels on an L72 car, rather than extending to the bumper.

It was ordered with 3.31 gears and in 1987 the 4th owner installed 4.10 gears, I have the original 3.31's & plan on keeping the 4.10's in it.
The trailer hitch was taken off in 1987 by the 4th owner from NJ, I would like to find another one to put back on, attached is a pic of what I need, the one bracket is still on the car.

Joe, I had the same questions for Les who bought the car from the cousin in 1985, I also thought it should have the rosewood being it is on the dash and it has the pedal trim. Look at the vintage photo from March 1987, you can clearly see it has the black center & the silver highlighted. The patina & paint on the shroud matches the paint on the wheel perfectly. I do know the 4th owner removed the chrome know & replaced it with the black knob. There is no Muncie on the handle as well as you can see in the pic. In 1987, I have receipts showing the purchase of a new Hurst Competition Plus shifter, the original shifter was removed & I still have it in my possession, they installed the new hurst linkage and cut the muncie handle off and put it on the Hurst linkage.
As for the exhaust, look at the vintage pics from 1987, it clearly shows the rear exit. You will be at Carlisle, come look for yourself.
Also attached are pics from the Sports Dept Brochure

Very nice wholesale invoice. How did the original owner secure that rare piece of paperwork?
When the original owner sold it to his cousin in 1983, there was no paperwork. It was not until 1985 when Les the 3rd & 5th owner called Wantz Chevy & talked with the owner & asked if they remembered the car & they did and told him they thought they had the dealer file & Les asked if he could get a copy & the owner told him to come over & he would give him the file. Also in 1985 when Les bought the car, he was going thru the trunk & removed the spare tire & pulled up the original trunk mat & found the POP.

Great car, Interesting that it has a small block fan shrould , maybe it was damaged by a failed motor mount and that's all they could find.
Are the original motor mounts still in it?

All big blocks were cast on molding line 1 at Tonawanda. All small blocks were cast on line 2. The "conv" and "HiPo" wording on the housing cores had no significance by the late 60s.

Beautiful car, and a great story. Why doesn't the Shipper document show L-72 437/425, just Z24 SS 427? Though LD on the protect-o plate is for an L-72 427/425 in a full-size Chevrolet in 1969 I believe. Not judging, just trying to learn how it was done back in the day.

The factory invoice should show it. Interesting that it does not. Probably a goof at the plant. The cost for Z24 is with L36 included. Should have shown L72 separately above M21. Wonder if the dealer saved some $ because of that and I wonder if there is a cost difference compared to the order form. Would be interesting to see. The Z24 ECL code AB is correct for L72. This car is one of 273, 69 SS427's with the L72!
Next thing to look for will be the build sheet. Since the interior is original, almost a guarantee there is at least one if not more. Either back seat half, under both bucket seats and inside the bucket seat backs are all places Wilmington left them. Nice it's a Wilmington car so you should find one. I've been working on deciphering the codes so it would be a good example to see!
Real glad to add this one to the SS427 registry. It's the 100th US built 69 Z24 in our list!

Hopefully there is another in a more accessible location. Some of those Wilmington sheets found in the bucket seats are really a PITA to get out there others are really easy. If there is a sheet in one of the back seats, it should be easier.
Two years ago, I found a pair of 66 Caprice bucket seats for sale at Carlisle. Could see a Wilmington build sheet in the seat back so the seller let me take the cover off and get it. That one was easy. The other seat had one in the bottom but it was wrapped around the back of the frame, impossible to get out without taking the seat apart. I didn't even bother with that one unless I could take the seat home. LOL

----Jeff,,, That build sheet, if you can't find another, is obviously important. I think I would take the seat back to a good interior guy and have him disassemble it and then remove the BS with less chance of damage. A good guy can do this and reassemble your seat and no one will ever know it's been apart. Small amount of money in the long run, don't you think?......Bill S

Hi Jeff,
Unbelievable Chevrolet!
Looks like starting around 1985 the “so important” paperwork started to surface from diligence and seems you are still finding documents in the car to verify what “you” already knew.
Crazy machine you have. The video is reminiscent of standing off from a P-51 at slow idle as it hammers away ..... hair raising!
Thank you for sharing with the world.

So if there were 546 L72 engines in total produced for 1969 in full size cars, then exactly half ( 273) ended up in SS427 cars and the remaining 273 were spread across all models ?

That is what I thought. But clearly the post I quoted states that 273 SS427 cars were equipped with the L72. That leaves 273 Non SS427 cars with the L72. Just repeating what he stated .
He's not saying what the breakdown is by model, just that the rest of the L72'S must have ended up in Bel Airs, Biscaynes, Impalas...
