I have forgot the details, but how did the engine get separated from the car?

I know the story but I would rather not share publicly.

I first met Mac in the late 80's, young and cocky and was completely oblivious that I was in the presence of a mechanical genius, he was a quiet gentleman watching us put a 1974 Pontiac 455SD motor into Detroit Tigers Kirk Gibsons Blazer.
Also met George DeLorean, he prepped a 455SD for us with a sheet metal 3X4 intake that went into a 1978Trans Am with a Datsun 280Z hatchback rear and a "Ram Am" aero front end AKA Superbird.
Here I thought the Pontiac Hemi was cool.

Just a quick observation about Mac:
As noted, he retired in 1982 with 45 years of service at Pontiac Motor Division (with his career culminating in the role of Engine Chief Engineer).
Pontiac was founded in 1926, or in other words, was 56 years old at that point.
Mac worked for PMD for all but 11 years (80%) of the division's existence at the time of his retirement.
