I actually have a black/ black loaded 4 speed 79. Need a 77 or 78 for sentimental reasons.

Hold out for the '78 Chuck, the W72 400 engine is better.

Correct, but 1978-1979 had the good 481988 XX block which is a thicker casting than the 1977 500557 thin-wall. Plus there were cam changes and induction system tweaks which meant 220 horse versus 1977 200 horse. The 481988 XX blocks are in 8 and 9 second Pontiac drag racers running today.
And no WS6 in 1977 available, only 1978-79, which makes a decent-handling car a REALLY decent- handling car.

You're not running 14s in a stock '77, ....no way, no how. Completely different engine.

Des, since Im wanting an auto trans i think that means no XX block anyway whether 77 or 78 ,right?

Nope, the good XX W72 400 was available with automatic in 1978. Look for a Z code in the VIN. Avoid the 403 Olds engine (VIN CODE K) which was the default auto. engine unless you specifically ordered the W72 as an option. Blech. (Note: ALL 4-speed Trans Ams ordered with a Pontiac 400 in 1978 and 1979 got the good W72 400 Pontiac engine by default.)
