Great picture of Malcolm Durham's ZL1 Strip Blazer Jr!
ZL1 #42 VIN 124379N615242 was last seen in the 70's but its original engine exists today.

There is reason to believe that isn't #42. Durham's ZL1 was one of the 50 Fred Gibb Chev ordered; all were X44 trim level meaning no bright drip rail trim. The car in the photo has the trim. For '69, the pillar rail on style trim cars is shorter; you can't just add the trim.

Legend has it there was a disagreement between Durham and Lustine and the car was repossessed. Original 1969 photos show Lustine sponsorship; gone in later photos.

Also vintage pics of ZL1 #4 show it ran in NHRA SS/BA. This car is in SS/E. Any NHRA historians care to comment?

The Durham car only has the drip rail moldings. none of the other trim is on it. The Price Fighter car has RS tail lights. Someone must have swapped them.

Camaros in NHRA class SS/BA was probably running a Big Block with Auto trans

Camaros in NHRA class SS/E was probably running a Small Block with manual trans

It was not uncommon to swap an engine trans combo to find a class you wanted to compete in for various reasons

I'm convinced Macolm Durham had two '69 Camaros. Looks like the ZL1 changed classes while in his possession.

The later car may be the white car on the roll-back with RS tail lamps. Has louver and drip rail trim. No "Strip Blazer" moniker. Could be it later morphed into the blue car on the trailer. That car clearly has the drip rail trim.

in this winner circle photo says the driver was Bernard Butler

Great pics and both appear to be the probable ZL1 early car.
No hood stripes as pic before York shot above also looks like the 9 on driver's windshield so possibly the same day?:hmmm:

It’s funny how they just plop the hood on top of the roof not knowing that that car would be so valuable.

I think neither. Looks to be a production standard hood that had a fiberglass stinger glassed in; then the tunnel-ram scoop added later.

this looks like the picture used on the COPO Connection book


The caption calls it an AHRA Super Stock match basher

it may have been a running as a Match Racer where they had little rules and big cube engines with duel quad tunnel rams

This racing was very fast and very popular in 1969 and lead to the NHRA Pro Stock class in 1970

I think SS/E would be a 396/375hp. But he probably changed classes for AHRA and NHRA tracks.

they classified the cars by weight/horsepower so the car can go up or down a class depending on the weight and the NHRA-factored horsepower changed over the years so you will see them running in different classes

looking at old pictures for examples ,

the 1967 Jenkin's L78 Camaro ran in SS/C

the Strickler 1968 Z/28 ran in SS/E or SS/F

The guy I bought my number 34 ZL1 from swore he knows where this car is 'hiding'....

it's been many years now though... he also mentioned that the original motor to the car was still around.

Hello everyone, my uncle has the motor out of the #42 ZL1 originally owned by Malcolm Durham, The motor is totally rebuilt and it’s in a tribute car to the #42. Lemans blue, dog dish hubcaps etc

Note that the top car says Strip Blazer Jr.
The bottom car says Strip Blazer Jr., but has the Jr up higher and something under it. To?
