I'm sure all you southern boys know this...and now this Yankee does too.:scholar:

This Day in History: Mason-Dixon Line Established

On October 18, 1767, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon completed their survey which established the boundary between the colonies of Pennsylvania and Maryland.

The Mason-Dixon line was established in response to an order issued by the British crown in 1760 to settle border violence between the colonies' settlers. This boundary, at 39 degrees and 43 minutes north latitude, later became the line along which states divided into the Union and Confederacy in the Civil War.

I think you may be off on this. See, actually it comes from a party that was held right around the Southern PA and Maryland area. The Pennsylvania people were in charge of bringing the punch along with glasses. They brought paper cups invented by John Dixinsloganhausen, a Dutch immigrant, who’s dad Richard was a well known inventor. With such a horrendous last name, John went by the nickname of “Dixson” referring to being Dick’s son. John’s most popular product was known as Dixie Cups. stemming from a combination of his last name and an a abbreviation of his mother’s maiden name Iesha. John didn’t bring enough cups, and the people from Virgina were not exactly excited about drinking from shoes. So they all went home and brought back a bunch of glass Mason jars, freshly cleaned from being dug up from the back yard and the money inside temporarily hidden somewhere else.

While at the party, somebody....possibly from New Jersey....spiked the punch. Someone realized that if those ‘Jinnians brought their jars up to drink, that means their cash was not buried in their yards anymore.:hmmm: Theives struck, word got back to the party four days later by horse, and then a massive war of civil proportions ensued! Mason jars and Dixie Cups were thrown everywhere!!!:rolleyes2:

Realizing that paper cups are no match against glass ones, they retreated but a clear line was drawn in the sand that day dividing the two areas; The Mason Jar and Dixie Cup Line. Over time that slanged down to the Mason Dixon Line. :cool2:

Oh, I’m pretty sure that’s how it all went down :cool2::dunno:

Cheers

Very creative!
Strangely enough these days if enough folks believe it it then becomes the new truth. "Alternative facts" all the way!
