67 SS396 on eBay. Really nice car, but what do you guys think about this block stamping. Looks to have been decked?

I have seen a lot of BB stampings that are directly under or underneath the head plug. The all “claim” to be original stamps. I am not sure how this could have been done.

Thanks. My concern is more what appears to be circular machining marks. They are very light, but I swear I see them!

This is the car...

It looks like a restamp to me.

Notice how high the center of the W is pointed on mine vs the one at auction.... IMO it is a restamp.

Tonawanda stamped the deck prior to the heads being installed.
"The engine suffix was stamped on the deck before the heads were mounted (at least for BB's....not sure about SB's), which would explain how some stamps can be so close to the heads that would otherwise make it impossible for a gang stamp to reach."

I'm pretty sure the pad is real. I see those swirls, but they are from a sanding pad, IMO, not machining.
It compares very well, both VIN and engine stamps.

Thanks Kurt. I was more concerned with the swirls than the stamps. I thought the vin stamping might be a little bigger than Normal too, but I don’t have a good comp.

Thanks guys. I have a message in with the seller asking to speak with him. One of the nicest 67 SS’s that I have seen advertised in a while.

Cool car and can't help but wonder what it was like before recent paint?
If Engine/Trans stamped w/ same gang, are the differences such as spacing between the L & 1 & 5 + font shapes of the 5's and first 8's also first 8 elevation @ bottom etc all just normal results of random hammer hits/loose letters in the gang/difference in materials being struck?
:hmmm:

I spoke to the owner and he has pics of the car before paint for anyone interested. 3 owner car...all are alive can be contacted. Thinks the second owner scratched up the pad cleaning it up. Nice guy, nice car. Looking for north of $60k.

That's a nice looking 67, and it sounds great too. Sounds like it has more than 325 horse?

It does sound nice. Claims to be factory cam etc. It does have true dual exhaust though.

We used to own a Fremont built 67 396/325 Chevelle...the stamp was much different. The 7 was kind of floating...I have seen other stamps like this before on this site. Maybe it has to do with the assembly plant..??

As for this one, I don't really see the broach marks the way others have looked...perhaps it is the digital image..??

Anyway, sounds like a cool car...I'm sure the gurus will figure it out.

regarding Big Block assembly stamps -
BIG BLOCKS were deck stamped prior to the heads being installed -

I don't like the "w". Questionable to me.
