Can someone give me a quick "what to look for" on a 69 Chevelle that might indicate it was an L78?

I’ll get it started.......None of the following are definitive but collectively will tell you if it is possible that it started life as an L78 Chevelle: 3/8” single fuel line (no return line), If engine is present: 3965272 cast block, 3919840 heads, 3933163 aluminum intake

6 grand tach, deep groove pulleys, hi-po part numbers on distributor, alternator, holley carb if still there.

Sorry, should have provided a little more info. Engine is a vin-stamped L78 out of a Nova, but I will check all the hi-po bits on the engine anyway. Any specific rear end codes with L78 or were all ratios available? Assume disc brake was mandatory since it had to be an SS? How about the radiator?

3959164-GE list 4346 Holley for a 4 spd. 1100837 37A Alternator. Eaton “CV” fan clutch. “BO” is code for 4sd radiator. Believe the lowest numerical code was a 3.55 ratio.

Isn't there something with the steering shaft?

That's Big Block specific,not L-78 specific.

Thanks all! I'll verify what's posted thus far and see if it still passes.

the quickest tell is the single fuel line,
FWIW if it's an auto and the original CX trans is still there, it has to be a solid lifter car.

Would that be a 3/8 or a 5/16 fuel line on the 6 cylinder car?

If it is a power steering car look for the deep groove pulley on the power steering pump that is usually not changed with a engine change.
