View Full Version : Nos battery Prep

Hey folks
I have a question on using an original NOS delco battery that's still factory sealed.
Using a NOS Delco Y87 and need to know what to do with the factory hole filler delco puts in each hole. Looks like a wax or plastic but do I need to pull these out or just push them in and fill the battery.

Just push them into the battery, I bought a NOS battery for my Corvette last year pushed in the wax plugs and filled it with acid.
Works great...
When it kicks the bucket I am going to put a gel battery inside it.

I read about something in the last 5 years which was being used on lead acid batteries as well, IIRC apparently there is a way to strip the plates using either electrolysis or chemical and electrolysis. (reverse the polarity or something) I know that lead is used in some type of plating process so there may be a way to remove the outermost layer of lead oxide? to expose fresh lead?
Just guessing here... I am in no means a chemical or electrical engineer.

I but a Braille battery inside mine. Works great. I was warned that the Braille batteries do not hold a charge long term. My experience has been just the opposite. I have two. I had one set in the car for 6 months without driving it or charging it. I put my battery tender on it, and it was fully charged within an hour. If I let my lead acid batteries sit even 30 days, it takes 12 - 24 hours to fully charge.

Well I gave it to a mechanic that thought the wax plugs should have been pulled out rather than pushed in and cracked one of the fill holes on the top. Oh well guess I am going with a reproduction R89.

Back in the day we used to use the Delco Eye cap and just hit it with palm of your hand and knock the plugs in,

Lol. You can’t be too careful.

For me, screen shots are too large, a pic will give me 3 choices, med works here fine.

The reproduction battery tops are not the same as originals(they take a 30% deduct in NCRS), they show divisions between the cells in the actual molded plastic.

If one of the holes is cracked then just gut the battery and put a braille inside of it...

I had considered just gutting mine before putting acid in it, but then numerous people said I should just use the battery until it stops working then gut it and put a braille inside of it... so it's now been working great for over a year.

I will second your point Kurt. These chargers are the chit! I've had batteries last 10 years with this technology. We used to handle these at NAPA years ago. If I remember correctly, this was developed for the military or by the military.

Either way, they extend the life of a battery and can revive them as well.

$740.00 sounds like a lot - but I have spent 5x that much on batteries the last few years.

I ordered the new reproduction battery R89 from battery central Mall.
Bothers me to be using it in my 30K mile survivor Z28 but still gives the appearance I like. Hey if after 50 years the battery is the only reproduction part under the hood, Iam happy with that. If Anyone would like to view my car google MCACN 2018 the mike wheatley Z28. Love this car and after 50 years it still runs and drives unbelievable.
