1971 Buick GS Stage 1

This 1971 Buick is being represented as an original matching numbers GS 455 Stage 1 wearing some of the original Cortez Gold paint along with a lot of incredible California patina. The trunk floor has a lot of surface rust, so I’d want to pull up that carpet for a closer inspection. Not everyone likes that California sun-baked patina, but I sure do!

I don’t know much about Buick’s, so I’ll let the experts chime in. I was surprised to look-up the specs and see that 10 bolt rears were standard on Stage 1’s. Were these really equipped from the factory with a Rochester carb? They seller claims the drivetrain is all matching numbers and shows the partial VIN, but he doesn’t state any other casting numbers, etc. No word of any documentation either. The car looks very unmolested, so I’m very intrigued. Too bad it doesn’t have a stick. I would add a set of bias ply tires, and... and that’s about it. What a terrific driver.

I wonder how high this unreserved auction will go?

I believe '71/'72 GTO/LeMan's with 455 received 12 bolts.

No 12 bolts in Buicks in 1970, no. There are a scant few non-Stage cars built in Oshawa, Canada plant that got 12-bolts, but that's it. Very rare. No Stage 1 cars built in Oshawa. 1970 GTOs with 455 option got a Chevy 12-bolt, 400 cars definitely did not. If that's a factory GSX spoiler on the front that the owner added (no spoilers available on non-GSX cars) it is $$$ . Nice car, love to have it.

They must have sealed them up good at the Fremont plant. It looks like the trunk was holding 3-4 inches of water at some point. I'm not sure what else would show water marks that high up.

In '71 and '72 the Skylark and Cutlass got the 8.5 corporate 10 bolt, which was stronger than the old 8.2 BOP 10 bolt. Pontiac continued to use the 8.2 and Chevy used the Chevy 8.2 and 12 bolt. There were some exceptions I suppose.

He mentions in the description that a rear wing spoiler is included, along with new carpet and the original floor mats. That front spoiler sure is a neat piece! If it really is an original Stage 1, would it have had a side stripe or was that an option?

I’ve inquired whether he has any factory documentation like a build sheet or dealer documentation like a warranty book and POP.
