View Full Version : 1972 Trans Am trim tag question
Confused about the trim tag for 1972 Trans ams, specifically, the style number. All 1972 Trans am style numbers that I have seen read 22387 yet all published trim tag decoders indicate number should be 22887. ???? I have seen 22887 on 71 TA's, but never on 72's . Any 72 TA owners can let me know their style number would be appreciated.

Should be 22387, some Van Nuys built cars used 22887 I believe

my old 72 T/A
Thanks for the replies guys. Frustrating that published trim tag decoding that I've seen is wrong on this, including my 1972 pontiac gm service manual . Out of curiosity, does anyone know if this style number is the same for all 1972 Norwood Firebirds?

In 1972, only Norwood was building the Firebirds and Camaros. That's why it was the target of the UAW strike. It killed off the entire Firebird and Camaro line for the 72 model year starting in April 1972.
This was the trim tag from my old 72 black on black Formula.

years ago I sold a trans am to a guy and months after he bought it I got a phone call from him wanting his money back because he was sure the car was rebodied because of this very thing. I liked to never have convinced him that is how they came. after checking the hidden vin body numbers and me showing him several examples he finally came around.

I can see how that could happen given that 22387 decodes as base firebird in the printed and online decoders I've seen. I'm guessing that a change in style number format from 1971 to 1972 is not reflected in GM literature. ?? Guess that guy was on strike too !! . I'm interested in any 72 firebird owners chiming in on this. Thanks, Tom
