69 Camaro Z/28 help

Hey everyone!

I am currently working on a project and trying to figure out if my 69 vinyl top Camaro is a true Z/28.

It has Z/28 emblems but we all know that could be just a cover ;)

The engine block number is 3932386 and the VIN is 124379L504274.

The only thing that makes me not think it is a true Z/28 is because it has an automatic transmission. This could have been changed though? Photos are attached

For starters, check the configuration of the original speedo cable routing.

If it was routed horizontally under the wiper motor, [see pic] behind the engine and down the trans tunnel, it was built with a Muncie 4-speed. Doesn't make it a Z/28 but a good indicator. Even if the cable was removed, the hole will still be there.

Check the frame where the clutch pivot ball bracket attaches and see if the holes are threaded. 4 leaf springs.

What's the trans tunnel look like?...

Check the back seat bulkhead for an x designation chalk mark

FWIW - the car's production date 10B and vin L504xxx means that the cowl induction hood was added at some point in time.
Anthony is asking the right question... is the tunnel shifter hole flame cut or is there indication it has been welded up? Also is there a Dual exhaust support welded on the frame rail on the drivers side.

If the car is unmolested there will in all likelyhood be a broadcast sheet on the top of the fuel tank... you may be able to see a corner of the sheet by looking in the drivers side rear wheel well around the fuel tank corner where it meets the trunk floor. If you see part of it... drop the tank and photograph and post it, unless there is almost nothing left someone here will be able to tell if it is a Z.

Here are some photos. Not sure any of these are helpful besides of the pedals that someone mentioned here. My mom took these as best as she could. There was no engine suffix code & partial vin in the photos she sent me. I may need to file it down so see it.

Please don't file anything down. If it is an original 302 block, the engine numbers were stamped by the factory on the right side cylinder head surface on the block behind-under the alternator. This surface was made using a very specialized process known as a broach and this leaves a very characteristic type of surface that is difficult to replicate and is used as a way to determine authenticity of the engine. Once you take a metal tool to clean this surface it is very likely you will damage it and it will be impossible to recover from it.
Instead use lacquer thinner to remove paint and if necessary paint remover. The harshest tool you would want to use (very lightly) would be a brass wire brush and brush in the direction of the length of the cylinder head surface, not across it.

It looks like to me the pedal assembly has not been out of the car. The underdash area looks pretty original. I am doubting it is a Z28. The heads are definitely not 1969 Z28 items.

Thanks for the advice. I will try and find the number and won't use a filer or anything like that. Man, my hope of this being a true z/28 is slowly fading. haha but we shall see. I will make sure to keep this thread updated with anything new that I find. Just wont get to it during the week. It will have to wait until next weekend the earliest.

Hi , looks like a nice start ... Does it still have the green vinyl top or is it black ? Another clue does it have air conditioning? The external heater box appears to be part of an Air box , & that wasn’t offered on Z/28’s

Sure looks like it was originally an AC and auto car, but it’d be good to pull the cowl vent panel and check beneath it for signs of stripe color coverage; although car may have been repainted at some point, as the cowl hood can’t be original, given build date.

Agreed, it was an AC and automatic, so not a Z.

Judging by the symbols on the front of the heads, they arent 186 heads or HP heads. Original A/C car. Very doubtful its a real z/28.

Very original under the dash, original color coded fuses, original dash mat (firewall pad), NICE and original under there!
