I have been going to the auction the past 9 years but not there this year due to virus.
The prices seem very strong?
Fellow Canadian from Legendary shoots the lights out with his Cobra bringing $5.4 mil! Reserve was off at $4 mil, he must be happy!

The sale appears to be very Strong ! Prices & Sold percentage are way higher than I expected. I seriously had my eye on a few cars. Researched and set my ceiling and I was prepared to bid to win somthing. But as of now I'm 0 for 3 . Wasn't even close on any of them ! haha

Danthat was the first brand new car I ever bought when I was 17. Really fast with way to much oversteer. Another car I should’ve kept, obviously by the 2021 prices.

So I am assuming you are at the auction? Curious what the attendance is like under the current circumstances - covid? You can't see much besides the car going over the block when watching on the internet.

"Must be all that stimulus money being thrown around..."
In all seriousness, some of this might be related to the run up in the stock market. If one has enough money invested, an extra $50K-$100K might be easy to find.
The Dodge Omni belonged to Carroll Shelby, make of that what you will.

I hang out on a Porsche forum and the run up in the stock market is being discussed as a cause for the current shortage of Porsches in the market. Some are claiming that prices are up 10-20% since the Pandemic.

Not to hijack but can someone explain this one to me? What's the difference between a Chinese booster and a correct one? Because when our Camaro gets swapped to discs, I'd like for it to look right (unless the price difference is insane, anyway)

Chinese boosters are stamped in the wrong place with delco moraine and the triangles are not stamped like they were on the originals.

Easiest “tell” for me on Chinese boosters is that the “O” in DELCO is more round on the fakes. Original O is more oval shaped.
I thought that attendance was pretty strong yesterday. We had to get there early to claim our seats on the floor. Crowd is intentionally not shown much on TV. Too many people not wearing masks over their nose.

Ah, I don't recall seeing that mentioned. I'm sure that had a lot to do with it, but still, I can think of better things to throw "extra" funds at. Like a winter home in FL or AZ...

Kissimmee was a record sell through and $$ total. I collect the early Honda minibikes, there were some good and not so good one's there the hammer prices were eye popping on all of them with a couple Z50's and CT70's hitting record valuations. #liquidity2021

I attended Mecum and I saw early on that there were a greater percentage of cars that would bring big money. Early days were as expected as the crowds were fair but certainly not overwhelming. The arena of course was open only to verified bidders. More so this year than in years past, those bidders were on hand for the lots that they were interested in purchasing versus just sitting there watching lots roll by. Obviously as the week plus moved along and the gems were closer to going across the block the bidders increased dramatically.
I would say that this years offerings had a very noticeable "very well done driver quality" to many cars. Don't get me wrong, there were some great cars, but if you were in the market with a reasonable budget, you could find a quality car here.
Crowds were steady but not the typical crush of people. The last weekend of course was a bit different. I would expect that future events will be similar in nature.

I would say, numbers/pricing is generally UP a good amount. I would note this '68 Mustang coupe @ $47,300 WITH Buyers prem:
https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0121-444947/1968-ford-mustang-gt-coupe/
Little over a year ago, there was a'67 AND '68 that were pretty much Identical, same stripe, vinyl roof, 390 auto Ac cars and BOTH were in the $18,000 range WITH buyer prem. Now this could be one of those cars, just restored/clean fixed up as it seems to be much nicer shape. Also the other 2 were cream color I think.
This '70 L78 Nova seems to be a very strong price for those cars:
https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0121-444878/1970-chevrolet-nova-ss/
This W30 convert seems down pretty much to what they usually bring:
https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0121-444923/1970-oldsmobile-442-w-30-convertible/
Sits pretty bad though
The 001 and 002 Firebird that Gas Monkey did seemed to be ok $$$ wise.

There was one just like this in Southern Cal I considered about 5-6 years ago, same exterior color, same color interior, but I think was a bench seat. Can't be too many 70 L78 Nova's floating around with these same colors.
Question, being a 70 I would expect to see the flat intake that was used on both Chevelle and Camaro that year. I'm seeing a 69 style intake in the pics.
Is this correct?? Maybe for an early car??
The Aqua/parchment 1970 W30 convertible was a mess in person. It was noted earlier the car sat too high, but the alignment of the fenders and doors was off and the interior was put together very poorly.

I've been wondering where all the money for crazy prices like this came from in a, supposedly, depressed economy. Is it foreign buyers having Americans bid fro them to hide their identity ? Did they give these people free rein to bid to win, so they just kept bidding ? Many of the prices are insane to me too. Hard to comprehend.
It will be very interesting to see if this frenzy carries over to Rick's auction. I'm betting he is very excited to see this come to him.

Wow! As a kid, watched our red/white Honda Z50 catch fire and burn. The gas tank developed a hole in it and began to leak. And that was that.
My brother and I shared it. I would imagine myself as a Trial rider in the woods. See how long I could crawl over things without putting my foot on the ground.
After the Z50 burned, we acquired a couple of used Trail 70s. A gold and blue one. Traded the Hondas off when we stepped up to some Yamaha MX bikes.

I evaluated 8 Musclecar City cars for myself and others. Only 1 was a decent car. Lots of re-pop trim tags & bad re-stamps. They really need to hire inspectors to more accurately describe the cars (like BJ). I feel badly for all of the successful bidders who got way less than what they thought they were getting based on the auction descriptions. Hard to believe that bidders are so cavalier with their money though. One ‘66 427/425 Corvette had so much grime on the stamp pad that it couldn’t be read. Up until the car went on the block - no one bothered to even wipe off the pad!

I was just talking to Bill about that, wondering if Mecum offered any inspection services like BJ does, with so many fake tags going across the block for big money. Apparently they don't. The buyers don't care? :dunno:

My thoughts on the big $$ are that... These cars are being bought by guys in their early 60's and up who are not "car knowledgeable" , they remember the cars from when they were young, never turned a wrench and now they have a disposable income.
They want something to look cool in going to cruise night...
My .02 cents worth
And when they find out they've been burnt they will sell their acquisition off and never buy another old car again. It's a shame that they don't arm themselves with information and make a wise purchase. They are folks that will be lost to the hobby forever in some cases. I see this often.

My observation at the typical Mecum Auctions has been that a very high percentage of the cars are bought and sold by dealers trading amongst themselves. I don't think that this was so much the case in Florida. The 2 day auction that just concluded in Florida was even more insane. I would caution everyone to not run out and buy a car based on the results of these two auctions. The results of these two auctions is completely opposite of what I would expect to be seeing in light of the recent leadership change in DC and the people that have already lost their jobs due to the indiscriminate signing of executive orders. I want to see at least one more auction before I jump.

So true. There is a gentleman near by that had that happen on a '67 big block Vette. I have been able to keep him in the collector car community by helping him make corrections to the car and improve it. Through this he has met many good friends and enjoyed improving the car through his stewardship. Now he is much more knowledgable and considering buying his next car.
An expensive lesson but one that can be learned from and make a person better for it.

To your point all this stimulous money has created quite a lot of liquidity and it's showing in hammer prices. Lot's of folks in dire straits, but a lot have made windfall income. Let's see where we are at in fall when the free money and pandemic are waning and we actually total up the level of devastation to the ecomomy. American's are 57 Billion behind in mortgage/rent currentely.

I would also add to this statement that many cars "appear to sell" but don't go to a new owner. Collections like the one being discussed are most often purchased by Mecum and then run through as if they were still owned by the "collector". Don't be surprised if you see many of them show up at future Mecum auctions and selling for less....
Does anyone know if the 67 Z/28 (lot A24 on Friday) really is an unrestored original with original engine, trans and rear?
If that is an original paint car with all original power train, then I would say it is the exception to the outrageous prices. $110k seems pretty reasonable to me.
Anyone know the story?

The '69 GTO Judge was THE most overpriced auction buy I have seen, probably ever. The car was a mediocre restoration with many wrong parts. INSANE. If it were a time capsule survivor, Ram Air IV with hideaways, being sold by the original owner, sure. But not this.

Mecum breaks own sales records at huge Kissimmee, Florida, auction
With more than 2,000 collector cars crossing the block with a resounding 89 percent sell-through rate, Mecum Auctions racked up $122.8 million in sales from its massive 10-day Kissimmee, Florida, auction, the highest overall result for a single-event auction in the company’s history and “an unprecedented sales percentage for a reserve-based auction of this magnitude,” the company said.
Less than a week later, Mecum auctioned the Motor City Museum collection of 200 cars and automobilia lots in Punta Gorda, Florida, adding another $18.4 million to January’s results, for a total of $141.2 million (all results include auction fees).
