Sorry I've been absent the past few months, things are a little on the crazy are around here (nnnooooo?:hmmm::tongue:) since we'll be moving again soon. More on that later, but in the meantime with the 507 coming along, I needed some mechanical dirtiness since I'm fresh out of projects. Enter that flathead from that 52 Ford I bought as a donor truck to the Flames to Fantastic 52 Ford I redid for my buddy!:3gears:

I finally got around to tearing it down to check the block out. Seems like these things like to crack and when they do, they do it in style. Luckily this one is only cracked in one of the head bolt to water jacket areas which is common and not a big deal. Oil pan rail and valve seat to cylinder wall are perfect.

Off to the shop for a bake, cleaning, and a mag check. Then, who knows? Maybe a hi-boy lakes style 32 Convertible with retracting top? We'll see. This is a 52 8BA still sporting a little of it's original green paint which is strikingly close to Detroit Diesel green.

Thought I'd post up since it's been a while!

Cheers:beers:

Here's the areas that crack. You can see one hole that has the crack line from the threads to the jacket. I cleaned the areas around the valve seat to cylinder wall and no cracks noted. Of course, once I get it magnafluxed and it shows more cracks than a plumbers convention, it might be garage art!

More to come.....

Cheers:beers:

I've been a member of a flathead group on Facebook "The Flat Spot" for about a year now and I've always wanted to play with one. Just not enough time and money for all of the things I'd like to do. Here is a little flathead "tunnel ram" that I picked up about this time last year. It's a pretty cool piece whether or not it's an improvement over a single carb. It's the only Eastern Auto piece that I've ever seen.

It's good to hear from you, Dave. We're in the Texas winter wonderland lately.

Cool Freddie! And yeah Mark, I was hoping to make the show in Naples to meet up with you, but it didn’t happen.

Tim, you guys ok down there? We are lucky so far. Power went out only for 20 minutes if that.

Cheers
Dave

I completely missed the part about you moving again. What's up with that? I hope it's for a good reason and not something bad.

We're in good shape in Austin. Our power has not been lost, so we're lucky.

We’re definitely not moving back to Joisey! I miss the shore, miss the seasons, and miss my roots, but nope...we’re staying in Texas!

Yes, it’s a move of preparedness for the current and eventual future turmoil that’s to become in my field of work inbound from two different angles; consolidation and hysteria. This time, however, I have have ample preparation time and won’t be caught blindsided. :scholar: Yeah, we put a ton of work into this place with us doing pretty much everything, but that’s ok. The next dude can enjoy it just as much as us! And just think, they’ll be another shop and barn thread to boot!:rolleyes2:

Dropping the block off Friday to get checked over!:3gears:

Cheers:beers:

What's wrong with Joysey???? Huh? (OK, a lot actually).

And to think I was gonna offer to trade you straight across for my estate up here. You never know what's behind garage doors number 1,2,3...

Thanks for the update, Dave. I'd sure like to have a '32 with a flathead in it, too.

This one looks like it has (modern) insert bearings, rather than babbit?

My Dad builds Flat head V8's often - at least 6 a year if not more.
He has 4 or 5 flathead powered Fords, most of them with Mercury cranks - strokers ... he is building one of the Flathead V8 9N tractors currently.
The 40 Woodie wagon has 25-30k miles on it since the restoration.
The 3/4 ton step side is a stroker merc.
The Big truck only had 4300 miles.

Few things sound as good as a truly pissed off Flathead.

Put mine in a 36 Roadster with a 3/4 race cam, some fenton cast iron headers, & a couple of strombergs.
