I used some Eastwood Chevy orange sprayed with a spray gun looked really nice ... The guy that I know used to detail engine compartments & I believe he used Allis Chalmers Orange & they always looked really nice..

I don't mean to throw cold water on the use of Seymour EN-48. That is what I have been using. But it seems to me the actual color was more orange than EN-48. Many blocks I have looked at were definitely not as red as the finish EN-48 produces. I thought it may be just faded with time, but I have a hard time believing that. EN-48 to me is a red color, not orange. I was pretty young in the late 60's and I certainly was not paying any attention to things like that, so I cannot recollect. Someone once told me that Plasti-kote orange was a more accurate and authentic appearance. I have not been able to confirm whether or not this would be correct or not. Maybe the more orange color was used earlier in the decade?
Any thoughts?

That has been my observation as well w/Seymour,and why Dupli-color #1607 Engine Orange wins w/me,and 12oz. for only $8.

Dang. I have used Dupli Color Chevrolet Orange forever.
Never tried Seymour or heard of this until now.
Duplicolor is readily available at my local parts stores too which plays into my decision.

Is there really that big of a difference?

In my opinion the difference between Plasti-kote and Duplicolor is fairly minimal. The difference between those two and EN-48 is significant at a minimum. I just do not know what would be correct. Restorations mostly show EN-48 or something similar in hue it appears.
I wonder if anyone has an untouched block from yesteryear and a block finished in EN-48 for comparison that they could post. To me EN-48 is red with a very slight orange hue. The pics of the blocks with EN-48 in this thread at least on my computer, do not accurately indicate the color that you see in person. The pics in this thread to me look a fair amount more orange than it really is. JMO.

427 yenko i personally contacted Jerry MacNeish top Camaro restoration guru in the Country via email. I asked Jerry what Chevy orange paint he recommended. The EN-48 orange paint by Seymour. Its his choice for engine paint. If i am going to take anyone's word for it about my paint question Jerry MacNeish would be my only source. Everyone has opinions and choices what they used and if they are happy with their choice, use it. I was one of those guys who saw Chevy engine orange paint manufactured by different companies. I got tired of guessing what was best and what orange was factory correct. Jerry answered my questions. What i liked about this paint to it dried fairly quickly and holds up great again heat.

----If we are talking rattle cans, it should be brought up that the quality of the product should also be considered. A can full of correct color chevy orange is only good if the paint can get out the tip and there's a good spray pattern. I can't count how many times I have bought rattle can paint and it ended up being useless, and I know how to clean a tip. Some paint companies just won't spend the extra pennies for good tips. OK, I'll jump in, I recently painted the engine on my Z/28 project and used Seymour EN-48. My shop partner was convinced there was negligible difference between Dupli Color 1607 and Seymour so I did a spray out as shown in the photo below. They differ in both gloss and color. I find coverage is poor with Seymour and it can require multiple coats vs Dupli Color which provides excellent coverage. Over on CRG opinions differ but Seymour is preferred.

What do the judges have to say about color and finish? Or do they not care as long as it is red/orange? Or does it even matter? You would think there would be points won or lost there but have never heard either way.

Unless something is totally screwed up or amiss I don’t know how a judge could effectively determine correctness. Just look at debates within our great forums on what to use, etc. NCRS only states what is painted Chevrolet Orange so if it’s in the ballpark and looks the part one is ok, but preference is placed on items that should be painted or not.

I like the gloss better of the duplicolor.
The original paint was not full gloss, just a bit of flattener....
