I've posted this before but its very much a period photo. My uncle's red/red/white top 1970 GTO 455/4sp A/C convertible, a slightly used "new" car to him upon his return from Vietnam in late 70 or early 71, trading in the '68 Dodge R/T I showed in an earlier thread. Trophies aren't from this car-they're actually from his brother's racing adventures in the 60's, mostly with Studebakers. I vividly remember riding in this car, usually heading with him to the CLARK gas station to buy gas and KOOL cigarettes.

Hi Tracker1,
I was speaking of “Popular” as in most liked (1965) from multiple surveys taken the past 40+ years in the GTO world.
As for Production, totals below.
‘64 - 32,405
‘65 - 75,352
‘66 - 96,946
‘67 - 81,722

MY buddy from highschool standing on the door of the 70 Judge convertible his dad bought in the mid-70's. Car is still owned by him, I painted 20+ years ago. When we were in highschool we would push it out of the garage in the middle of the night and go street racing - factory 4.33 gears so it's at redline about 90 MPH.

RA IV 4.33s 4 speed I remember running him in my 69Z (oval port 427) I felt good hanging with him it was original paint and only like 35k on it it used to be in Houston (track pic) before I think its up in northeast now it did get painted before it left Texas

Pontiac advertisements and their brochures from 1959 through 1971 had beautiful artwork from the famous Arthur Fitzpatrick and Van Kaufman.
Below are a few of the reflections and shadows that were featured on these awesome illustrations.
Father's Day weekend a few years ago I had the opportunity to participate in the "Eyes on Design" event, held at the Edsel Ford Estate.
The show is an "invitation only" event (cars are chosen by a selection committee) and benefits the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology. The show is also unique in the way cars are judged, not by how well they are restored (or survived) but by how the design (ie, styling) created trends, enabled technology or reflected the culture.
The theme for our specific display was the advertising artwork of Art Fitzpatick/Van Kaufman. I was asked to bring both the GTO and the Grand Prix. As you might expect the vehicles were displayed with the corresponding advertising art.

Thanks! I have no idea but I'm assuming most were ordered with the auto or 4-speed. I bought it from the original owner who special ordered it with discs, the WS engine, and a few other things. The salesman thought the 4-speed was standard with the WS engine, so everyone was surprised when the car came in with the 3-speed.

He was laying out & installing the wheel opening trim when we got there saturday afternoon. - The Red Pinstripe will be going on as well.
It's real and a very solid original car - previous owner bought it in the 80's.
Correct as shown WT engine with block dated 2-3 weeks prior to car build. He has ordered the PHS. Am restoration never off the frame. 67k miles - dealer undercoated new still on there.

1966 speedometer (so true mileage is a question).
No door jam light switches
No interior rear jam end caps.

Lots of good information here. Great reference photos!
These engine bay photos show exactly what Factory components were used, such as the rubber fuel hose and the PCV hose (GAS GAS GAS).
Also the alignment lines on the top radiator hose and short heater hose.
Heavy duty 4 core radiator that was mandatory with the high performance Tri-Power engine.
Rubber fuel hose from filter to 4 way brass fuel block which was used on a Pontiac build.
Fremont built cars typically used the steel U shaped fuel line around the front carb.
The 5178 written on the front carb bowl.
Flat top rubber cap to seal the hollow rear carb mounting stud.
The 3 way plastic plug wire separator.

This Reef Turquoise 1966 GTO that I once owned made it into several magazines back in the early 80’s.
It was also used for the box art of a Revell model.
I packed all my belongings into the trunk and back seat of this car and headed west from my hometown Springfield, Illinois to the SF Bay Area in 1978.
It started out as a 4BBL. Automatic but I had it changed to a Tri-Power 4 speed a few years after living in California.
That’s what a lot of us did back in the day.
Today, it’s all about Factory Original Survivor cars for me.

Bill,
I assumed someone may think that’s my house ….. Nope, darn it.
My house would fit inside that guys living room.
I knew I had a photo shoot coming up for the ‘66 and my job was to find a location.
Me and my wife drove past this house in Los Gatos, Ca. and I stopped to knock on the door.

The 1968 RA II was a package. High flow heads, special cam with a 4.33 rear. With just a little distributor and carb tuning, car will run under 13 seconds in the quarter mile.

To clarify for the Chevy guys, the 1968 Ram Air was a carry-over from 1967. But in April 1968, it was replaced by an engine called the Ram Air II. This was the first of the round-port engines, which later included the RAIV, 1971-72 455 HO, and 455 SD.

One of my old GTO's, this is a '67 400HO TH400 car with some nice options. An original CA black plate car that "had" all of the original and functioning smog equipment when I bought it. Of course like many did, I removed it all and tossed it into the trash and changed it over to the more attractive 49 state setup with the open element air cleaner. I also changed the color from Linden Green to Regimental Red which I regretted later after seeing a freshly restored '67 Linden Green GTO. That's just what we did back then.

The Tiger promotions for the GTO started around late ‘64 and ended in very early 1967.
At most every Pontiac dealer during these years you would see various Tiger related items from a Tiger rug, Tiger toy, Tiger tails and even a ‘65 GTO completely painted like a Tiger.
A few vintage black/white advertisements featuring Tiger promos.
Both my GTO’s came with a toy Tiger from their respective Pontiac dealer when new.
Fortunately they are still in their Original place after 55+ years.

The throttle bracket is correct for the Vacuum linkage.
They probably did some improvising to by pass the vacuum system.
The vacuum switch is still present on the side of the center carb along with the thermo switch coming off the front of the intake manifold.
Most everyone was trying to eliminate the Vacuum linkage early on with these GTO’s.

Striping
A few observations:
Someone from Florida gave me a beautiful clear hardcopy of that photo back in the pre-internet days. It might be ambitious for me to think all the internet versions floating around came from my first post of that photo, but...maybe.
A couple thoughts, I guess, while we are here:
a) Photo taken in the Pontiac Michigan facility, Plant 16. That's were the final prep/polish took place before shipment.
b) You can see he is using a Beugler paint tool and following along the top of a paint fixture attached by vacuum cups. In spite of that there was a lot of variation between assembly plants, in terms of where the stripes started and stopped, and in some facilities the ends of the stripe were "taped" to provide a terminus, whereas in other plants the stripe was left to trail off naturally.
c) You can also see the repair/inspection tickets laying on the top of the dash. Once the item is taken care of the repair person would punch the box with a little hole punch; the punch would have different symbols (hearts, moons, clovers, etc) so that it could be traced back to a specific operator. The location of the tickets is significant, too. They could be placed behind the windshield wipers, smashed in the A pillar vent, or rolled up in the door handle - each location flagging what what repair or prep step was next and where the vehicle should be shuttled.
d) Note that this operation takes place off line. Jobs that are not tied to the assembly line (heavy repair, drivers, material control, etc) are highly coveted in the assembly plant and - since every benefit and job assignment is based purely on seniority - are usually manned by the older personnel. I love the fact that this looks like somebody's grandpa doing this job. I don't love that I am probably older than him now than he was when this photo was taken.

It reminded me of this '66 I looked at buying. The original owner installed something similar on his car when new.

'67 GTO that I bought when I was 17 for $600 back in 1985. It was a black interior 4 speed with power front disc brakes(4 piston calipers) tach/gauges no console. Car was originally turquoise. California black plates too. I was a dumb kid and sold it for $900... what the hell.. I made a couple hundred on it..

Here is my friend and former employee Nancy with her Mother's brand new HO/HD 3 speed (Odd combo!) '67, sold from Feldman Pontiac in downtown Waterloo. The building is now an Overhead Door franchise, I happened to drive by while it was stripped for re-paint.
Also more recent pix, Nancy is in contact with the current owner in IL.

Grant,
I’ve had that pic in my files for years and always pause when I see it because it’s fascinating.
Two girls checking it out makes me wonder if they had anything to do with that mangled fender.
At least the 3x2 looks saved.

I think the picture is fascinating too. But my first reaction was they are joking around making it appear that the GTO and tricycle collided causing all that damage. Either way, great pic and great thread.

Okay , was just checking if maybe you were the owner or restorer.
The Billy Goat Judge survived mostly intact from its race days (original engine long gone).
A man bought it and put it up back in the 70's iirc , and has handed it down to his son.
The son had commissioned a frame off resto and was doing some updates once in a while on PY Pontiac Forum.
But no updates in a pretty good while.
Its going to stay in race car fashion as pictured.
Was originally an early pattern judge - RA3 4spd

By and Large the favorite year GTO.
This ‘65 is a Sport Coupe (post) that is rolling on 5 spoke aluminum wheels.
No outside rear view mirror.
Slightly raised in front.
I’d bet it’s a 3x2’s 4 spd. meant to terrorize back in the day.

Stephen Pontiac 68 RAII GTO raced by bill Eckstrom
Pontiac performance division Bristol CT raced a 69 RAIV bird and a 70 RAV bird through 73
Article in Jan 72 Rodder and super stock magazine annoyed GM enough that they pulled some of their. Parts that were at Butch Elkins shop Diamond auto at the time and kicked them Out of the racing program
Although let’s face it after 73 was there really any worth while racing anymore. .
The car was marigold yellow not Mayfair maize as many think. Their signs were bright yellow and marigold matched the sign better.

Was it a "special paint" car?
That would explain the steel front bumper, as endura was not available with special paint.
Or - might have been ordered that way on purpose, as the steel bumper was (presumably) lighter than the endura system.
