Oil for Duramax Diesel

Definitely not restoration, but this is technical.

I don't have a diesel. If I did, I would probably use Shell Rotella T6 full synthetic.
In fact, I have used it in my BMW turbocharged car with outstanding results.

My brother just bought a used Chevy (or GMC... can't recall) with the Duramax Diesel. I know several of you guys have similar trucks. What oil do you like?

Amsoil is probably the best that you can get.

I've used Rotella T6 in all of my Duramax's. It's fairly priced, readily available, and does a great job.

Of course, oil threads get highly debated. There was another thread a bit ago about oil change intervals. I myself change at 5000 religiously. Frequent oil change intervals are the absolute cheapest insurance a person has for engine life.

I put 375k on a 2005 Duramax I ordered new and then sold it to an employee. It is still going. I then purchased a used 2005 with 61k on the clock, it now has 402K. Both always had Amsoil. I use the bypass filter and change oil every 25K. I use the Amsoil in the Allison trans as well.

I have used the GM oil in my last 6 Duramax truck.
But I also have GM do the work.
One striped oil pan bolt taught me that
Have always used Rotella in all my Fords.
Never had an oil problem with either

I use Rotella T6 full synthetic 5W40 year round. Have never had any issues.

If it helps anyone considering....

I sign up every year as a preferred customer for $25 and get the preferred pricing. I buy in bulk for all the cars to save a little more and usually wait until they have a free shipping offer too.

Even with the membership fee, and any tax added, it still ends up cheaper per quart (by about $3 a quart) than what the stores get locally for it. It is available locally, our local Napa carries all Amsoil products so if I need something in a pinch I can get it. But I usually try to plan for the year and place one order.

I was an Amsoil dealer for 15 years. I gave it up when I closed my rear end business, but I still use it in my Camaro transmission and rear end. I still believe it's the best oil you can get. I wouldn't have sold it if I didn't believe that.

I use my GM dealer...due to the fact if you deviate from there oil change policy whatsoever you will void your vehicles GM warranty. On a better note I get free lifetime oil changes for my 2015 Duramax GMC from the dealer.
