Here's a car that is going through my shop right now. I am freshening some things up on this 70k mile 65 L76 roadster. A great solid car, that appears to have every original numbered and dated component. Beautiful original interior!!

This is going to prove to be a great driver for someone when it's completed.

I've got a Dewitt's radiator on the way, fresh set of gold lines, and a small amount of items to replace the typical parts store items (battery cables, heater hoses, etc). I just finished rebuilding the carb, will rebuild the clock, pull the gauge cluster to clean all of the gauge faces / lenses, and overall just give everything a good going through.

Pretty car, Tim. The 1965 yellow is stunning, it looks like they used the correct shade on the repaint.

I'm not sure. It's the one thing that is out of line on dates Bob. It's dated Dec 1964. The rest of the dates are pretty tight. If you are interested, we can arrange something. It is kind of a sprinkler though just to be up front.

First round of cleaning this morning yielded the engine suffix crayon marks. Pulled the valve covers afterwards to find the properly dated 461's along with the original "O" rocker arms.

On a different note, have you seen a remanence of paint on the deck like found here? I cannot say that I recall that. The rest of the paint on the engine strikes me as original (obviously with the crayon marks on the head).

I neglected to answer the other question Bob had in his post "will the car be for sale?" Yes it will. If anyone would like to know more about the car, feel free to reach out.

Thanks for the continuing interest!

I've owned 2 1965 365hp corvettes, these are the best of the C3s,
plenty of power, no heat coming in the passenger compartment
like Big block cars, 4 wheel disc and one of the few solid lifter Chevrolets
engines to be offered w/air conditioning.
365 HP corvettes were not available with power steering because the 6 Qt
oil pan left no room for the steering ram.

Tim, this car keeps getting better and better. I would keep the radiator with the car, 4 months is a little far but still could have happened. I also like the sprinkler comment. I wish I could buy it but I have no more room.

I've been more of an office clerk today than pulling wrenches. Pulled the plugs and completed the Williams / Hinckley valve adjustment procedure. Obviously this still has the 30-30 cam in it. Despite old crusty plug wires and old stinky fuel, the plugs looked good IMO!

When they’re old like that can they sometimes leak between the resistor and the hex head? They look a little burnt there

Too Many Projects
11-29-2021, 11:02 PM
If they were leaking at the hex, there will be a carbon ring at the base. Most of what you see is crap from rotten wires. The black shadow may be some leakage from the boot being brittle and not sealing anymore. That is quite common.
The center electrode looks to have a crisp edge, with no rounded appearance from wear.

I got some parts in today including the correct vacuum advance can. My original was out to lunch you could say. The correct vacuum advance can is not as readily available as it once was. I did find a vendor that cataloged theirs for the high performance 327's, but it did not begin to pull at 4" of vacuum like these cars should.

I checked the new one pictured.........and voila!

The weights were gummed up with this grease (which I understand one should never do). Everything is cleaned, new points and condenser........set the dwell and on to the next item!

Tim,

I subscribed at the beginning of this thread, mainly because of the light yellow on black combination, I’m partial.

I started taking the front seats out decades ago to perform work under the dash as I felt like a pretzel 🥨 after exiting.

Curious, shouldn’t the Delco-Remy cap for this ‘65 be the “Patent Pending” only with the tall towers. No “R”, as I show below.

Yup, that vintage SUN distributor machine is really cool.

I enjoyed watching the work you did on that cool Black ‘64 FI awhile back and I’m watching this ‘65 getting dialed in.

Thanks for documenting, Chris

I have been lucky enough that a FEW parts rolled in. I cleaned up what looks to be the original General Jet Air II spare tire. There seems to be no information on decoding these stamps, so I am left to speculate this is original given the "5's" in the stamp. Mike V. was also kind enough to lend a hand with the information on these wheel weights. Not the typical Micro brand weights but it certainly plays the part.

I was toying with the idea on this car. I guess my decision was based on the fact this is real original paint on this engine whereas I was just trying to make the 64 look the part. Especially with the suffix / crayon mark there, I'd hate to put any doubt in someone's mind.

Happy New Year Tim,

It’s a valid question about a possible light squirt of orange, but I’d leave it for the next owner to decide.

What you see is what it is …… more transparency, which in this day and age is paramount.

Plus, it won’t ruin a sale.

Finally, an update on the 65. After a 3 week wait for the radiator from Dewitt's (which was actually closer to 8) I could get going.

With a new radiator in place, I now could fire up the car.......to only run into a couple of other Gremlins. First, with the cooling system able to be pressurized, I discovered a small coolant leak between the intake and cylinder head. Sadly, the original intake gasket had to be sacrificed. That was met with a broken intake bolt at that spot. Can you say pandora's box?

Pull it down and weld a nut to the remaining portion of the bolt and BAM......out it comes!
https://i.imgur.com/m0wQUZ2h.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/hMu92Rzh.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/OniHyNUh.jpg

A new intake gasket, and reassemble. On the bright side, it allowed me to do a much better job of cleaning the intake manifold.
https://i.imgur.com/nwOnmREh.jpg

The second gremlin......the carb. The idle screws were literally unresponsive, in addition to a nice assortment of leaks. Soooooo........off to Eric Jackson @ Vintage Musclecar for some love. Eric found the primary metering block to be out .027 and the secondary .020. A few other less significant issues as well. If all works out, I should have the carb back late this week.

The tires were a bit crusty to say the least........had to lube the beads (after they were broken) in order the get them off of the wheels.
https://i.imgur.com/D2g074eh.jpg

I'm sure some of know the drill of skinny bias plys.......not fun to get the bead seated. So ratchet straps and the bead blaster. You'd probably witness something similar when a person throws a football in by the monkey's at the zoo:dunno:

Looking great, Tim. You're lucky the intake bolt snapped at the head and you could weld a nut on. My usual luck is to have the bolt snap flush with the deck...:mad2:

Surprised you couldn't get the tire to inflate with just the bead blaster. I've used mine a lot when I had the Pete and it would always expand the sidewalls on those 24.5 tires. I USED to use ether until I lost my eyebrows enough times... ever read Patrick McManus ?...Poof, no Eyebrows.
