I’m looking to buy a correct black 4 speed two piece shift knob for my 67 Camaro L78 car. Good used, really nice used or NOS, no repop.

Best regards,

Richard, are you looking for the one piece black knob or the two piece? I think one piece was original. I have a nos one piece black one. I just gotta find it.

I thought the two piece was correct for 67 but maybe I’m wrong. I’ve had this car 27 years and learn new things about it all the time.
Others chime in please. Help me out.

I think they introduced the two piece cause the single kept stripping out.

The CRG has a really good report on shifters, linkage and knobs. The correct knob is stated to be 2-piece black and chrome with shift pattern.
Here's the link:
http://www.camaros.org/shifters.shtml

The '67 AIM shows the 2-piece knob but doesn't specifically include the L78. It may be that the knob revision of 3-10-67 was prior to L78 production.

The '68 AIM show the 2-piece knob and states "12000 EXC. PROD V8 ENG & RPO L30-L48" in the title block. I believe this includes all big blocks.

This is the Muncie handle and GM 2-piece knob that will be installed in my 67 Z. There is a "G" molded into the top half of the ball.

Early Camaro’s used the one piece therefore the March revision.

My cars build date is 06A so I’d say the two piece would be correct for it.

Thanks all.

Thanks for the confirmation, I wasn’t sure how to interpret the shifter knob revision notes in the AIM. I’ve got a 01D L30 M20 car that will need it’s knob swapped out to a 1 piece.

Hi speed passes with fast shifting weaken the threads.

I agree. The lower knob was added to the AIM in March in 3 illustrations.
But it's confusing - 3895201 was replaced, but by the same number. 3895201 and 3895202 were in the early parts manuals, and then 3895201 was used with the 2-piece system.

My question is: if the early knobs were one piece, how did they lock them into the right orientation for the shift pattern?

I’ll add a little more to the subject. Was the 69 black 4 speed two piece the same as the 67-68 except tapped 3/8 inch for a Hurst shifter?

Thanks

I’ve seen a thin nut under the knob to lock it into the correct pattern

That's not shows as being removed from the AIM nor is it in the early parts manuals. :(

I believe they are the same except for thread size. Here's the 3/8-16 knob that came on the transplanted Hurst shifter in our 67 Camaro.
