Had both on order for quite awhile and ended up getting both in the last week and a half.
Lucid Air Dream # 414, 1111 hp…simply amazing.
Rivian R1T 835 hp
Have only had the Rivian for a day so not much to say yet.
The Lucid I’ve put a couple hundred miles on and just stepping on the go pedal makes me giggle. I have never driven anything that accelerates so smoothly and this thing is a rocket. What a amazing car for a first time manufacturer.

Congrats Charlie!
I have been watching the Rivian for quite a while now, just not enough $$ in the bank for the switch, plus current driver only has 35K miles, too soon to let it go.
Wow, I’d like to see that in real life. I’m tempted.

Remember how fast slot cars were. Lucid is like that. No shifts, just straight acceleration. I have a friend that does track days in his Porsche GT2 RS, Ferrari's etc and he recently bought a Tesla Plaid. Then he bought another. He lowered them and changed the rims. Posted online that they are now the most fun cars he has

Slot cars? You got an idea there!
Why dont they make them like the old Aurora AFX cars with separate chassis and bodies so we can swap bodies whenever we want. Remember when you were a kid? I think I had all the AFX Trans Am series cars and the wing cars that I would just find the fastest chassis and then put the coolest body on it and have fun.

I had that Chaparell Camaro slot car, Steve, that was my favorite.
A friend from Daytona picked me up at Mecum Kissimee in a Tesla Plaid and we did stiplight accelleration runs for an hour. My head hurt from banging against the headrest so many times. The strange thing is no noise, a cop could be in front of you and wouldn't hear you taking off.

Charley, Have you tested the range of the Lucid yet?
Really interested to see if it lives up to that claim in the real world, and what is the recharging times? I suffer from range anxiety as I frequently drive longer distances.
Charley Lillard
03-30-2022, 02:55 PM
Under normal driving it will probably do 400+ miles on a charge on the 1111 hp model but I'm having so much fun lead footing it the range is probably closer closer to 300. If you are going to go on a trip you can enter where you are going and the car will show you all the charge points along the way and suggest when to charge. This car will take 900 volt charging that will add 300 miles range in 20 minutes if you are at the right charge station. This is all very new to me but OMG this is so much fun. I'll look for the review where they tested it to see if the range claim was true and it was.

There are a number of companies deploying charging solutions, a mix of OEMs and 3rd party. For example ChargePoint and EVgo are two national players. VW has Electrify America. From what I've seen the charging players are logically targeting urban areas (big cities) but also look at popular roadways where it can make sense. It's a neat scene, I am a headhunter and we cover power / renewable energy and expanding into EV.
But yeah rural areas will be last.

How long does it take to charge Charley? I have heard anywhere from 20 to 120 minutes depending on how low the battery is and the kW rating of the charger. Can you imagine waiting that long to charge your vehicle if you are in cue waiting to hook up? I would also be interesting to know how much battery capacity drops as a function of the load being towed.
I think right now EV's make sense if you can charge at home all the time and use them around town. For long trips or living out in the sticks you better have a plan.

Out here you can't burp without seeing a Tesla. You don't want to race a Tesla Plaid. I have no experience yet using charging stations other than charging at home overnight. Plugs into a 220 50 amp 14-50 plug and I'm fully charged in about 8 hours. The charge stations on the road vary in output. Lucid is setup to take up to the new 900 volt charge and can add 300 miles range in 20 minutes.

Pretty easy math. In SE Michigan the residential rate is about $0.18/kWh. Charley's Lucid has a 118kWh pack which probably requires more like 130kWh to charge all the way from dead to 100% state of charge, which is about $23.

I'm like alot of you that thought electric cars are stupid but after a few weeks of driving these two I am convinced that I really really prefer them over gas or diesel. Musk has stated he is going to build a nationwide network of stations similar to the Buckees with a boatload of really fast chargers. You plug in and go inside to get whatever it is you want and in a few minutes you are charged. I'm convinced that these things are so good it will drive advancements in batteries, charging etc. I just wasted over two hours at the Porsche dealer getting it's first service. Driving it home I was thinking how much better the Lucid drove. I have made the decision to sell my Raptor and probably the Porsche. You guys know I'm a car guy. This is the next level in advancement. Musk is saying he will Have a Tesla 2 door sports car that will run 7's in the 1/4, go 250 mph and get 500 miles to a charge. Maybe we end up with enough electric cars and trucks that the cost of oil drops and gas will get cheaper. Competition is always good. That 670 hp unit that the guy is holding in the video is basically engine, trans and rear all rolled into one.

I'm fine with the growth of EVs in new car and light truck sales, just to put it in perspective usually ~16M new vehicles are sold every year. EVs currently are small percentage of those, but it's probably going to grow pretty fast. A former neighbor of mine who is a German guy with VW said that the VW mass produced vehicles will be a mix of ICE, hybrid and EV but he does not foresee VW going full EV anytime soom.
On a side note I'm impressed to have a truck that gets 18mph city.

On EV front, I am pro a hybrid approach. After seeing what can happen if a grid is taken out, having gas around is a good thing. The control of the materials that make up batteries is another topic I am sure we will all learn the pros and cons of later when EVs ramp up.
Interesting blue tone in the wheel color vs the body color. That caught my eye.

Correct they were towing a Mustang. Towing and batteries are a non starter.
Towing Batteries and Air conditioning, or heat, or accessories, or anything convenience based is ditto.
When I towed 8 hours over to Carlisle I used a CUMMINS Turbo Diesel. I was able to pass big rigs at will and the engine automatically applied engine brake in tow/haul mode going down hills.
Long trips are stressful enough -especially towing- you just want to get there and have what you need to do so safely.

Yep. I saw awhile back the pic of the broken truck and went and checked my ball joint nut. Had paint inspection marks that lined up. They are also sending out emails that they are re engineering the power bed cover and will replace them when ready. Mine is working fine though. So far I love the truck but just lost one of my keys....

----My question must have an answer,,,I hope! Whats going to happen to electric vehicles after running around on salt covered streets for a couple of years? That could keep a couple of EV owners awake at night, I would think!....Bill S

I betcha this becomes the next fad version of "patina" paint.
The "Tesla Bystander" patina.
Almost like the old Country Squire woodgrain
Pumpkin Spice accent, available only during October thru Dec. :)

Unbelievable, I guess you don't want to be caught inside or on top of a Tesla floating down storm surge river waiting to be rescued.
Olredalert comments about salt infested roads, slush etc. is going to be interesting to see how this plays out especially now that New York State is going all electric by 2035. That is a lot of cars to think about.

I thought of you the other day Charley. A surgeon I call on recently took delivery of his Lucid “Air”.
He loves it!
You’re right, it hauls azz!

I saw these two YouTube clips and immediately thought of Charley's Lucid. Very good details to know more about the underside construction of the Lucid Air.

The video links that NV posted are done by a company that buys new electric vehicles, completely takes them apart and writes detailed reports on them for other manufacturers to buy and analyze.Every fastener etc.Pretty impressive.

I did not realize that is what they did, kind of just stumbled onto those clips by accident.
Being a mechanical Engineer myself and looking carefully at those videos there are surely some things Lucid can do to reduce part count and fastening methodologies thereby reducing costs. I too would be concerned about part clearances but the end of the band clamp at the start of the first video could easily be spun around to reduce contact with the rubber hose beside it. The edges of the clamp depending on sharpness could be another matter.
