So, I was a big fan of the first movie as it came out when I was 20 and I loved the entire experience and couldn't wait for a sequel. I couldn't believe they waited 35 years for the next one, but we saw it on Friday and after all these years I prepped myself to be disappointed as I just wasn't sure what to expect. I have to say that they did a great job on a new story with solid tie ins from the past, new characters, and Tom Cruise being an older and more contemplative character himself. Great movie for the whole family.

Awesome, good to hear. Actually, haven’t heard much bad about it.
Stoked to go see it myself. Thanks for sharing.

I also had my expectations in the tank on this one. Lots of cliche in the first few minutes, then it got real.....a movie that lifts you up for days.

Add me to the list of sceptics and expecting the worst. I went Monday night and was pleasantly surprised as I was expecting the majority of the action scenes to be all computer generated. Some were but many were very real. It was not as good as the original but I was certainly not disappointed. It did follow similar story lines but they were changed just enough to make it feel like a different movie. There were several times where the entire audience applauded to a particular scene which I do not recall that happening in the original. Very good movie.

Add me to the list - we went not expecting it to be as good as it was. We really enjoyed it. Not as "believable" as the original but very entertaining and enjoyable to watch. We liked all of the tie-ins and references to the original movie. First time to the movies for me in 4-5 years probably.
Tom Cruise being ageless, but how many cast members from the original are in it today?
Are Meg Ryan & Kelly McGillis in it?

There has been a lot of internet discussion about Kelly McGillis not returning in her role.

Kelly McGillis said herself, that she's too old and fat to be in it, and that it's not what people want to see. She also said, however, that she's happy where she is in life and happy to be aged appropriately. Meg Ryan isn't in it either. I read that they wanted a new story without a lot of the prior actors. The only ones in it from the first are Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, but they did mention Penny Benjamin in the first one who is now played by Jennifer Connelly, who looks perfectly her age in relation to Tom Cruise.
It's not perfect, but it's a good movie. And I'm sure the pilots and war plane experts could tear it apart, but for the general public, it's good stuff.
There is also a funny bit with Tom Cruise and James Corden that was on Corden's show that you might want to see. I thought it was really funny:

Thanks,so "Iceman" is in it,but not "slider"? Rick Rossovich looks like he could still play the part today.

VK, Iceman, is in it, and his part is the most moving part of the movie. No one else.

I saw it yesterday and have to admit, I felt the delay was all Cruises' ego, it was worth the 2 year wait. VK's part is small and moving, but the interaction with "Rooster" was the most emotional part for me. Damn near cried when Goose died in the original and this brought it all back to deal with.

Saw it tonight with my youngest son, 23. My older ones didn’t want to go leaving the movie, son “what did you think of movie”?…. He says “ that was a great movie”!
Go see it!!!
May ruffle a few feathers here, but hopefully we can be brutally honest, and just agree to disagree.
FINALLY, after all this time, found something that Mitch and I DON'T have in common. (As a side note, we both had 54 Chevys as our first cars, are almost the same age, and seem to like almost all of the same vehicles.)
I thought the first one was really silly. I certainly hope we don't have anyone flying machines like that who are as arrogant as the a holes depicted in that movie. In fact, I stopped dating a girl in the early 90's after she told me "Top Gun" was the greatest movie of all time, and talked me into coming over to her house to watch it on video. Barf.
If the second one is "Not as "believable" as the original" as stated above, then I can already tell you, I am out.
Even though that was the end of me and what's her name, I won't stop being friends with you guys just because you like Top Gun or the sequel.

Eh, everyone has different tastes. I'm sure you like some movies I don't like, but who cares? It's irrelevant as it's just a movie. Cheers.

I had a good chuckle with your reply :beers: I seen the first one when I was 8 and then again a couple weeks ago. I thought it was awesome at 8 years old, I didn't even watch 15 minutes this last time...
I wouldn't hold any friends thoughts about a movie choice against them, future spouse yes.
We are watching the Saturday matinee as a family... we will see

Its interesting watching the replies to a thread like this. It is an entertaining movie and perhaps even better than the original.
What gets me is the desire for a "manufactured realism". Long distance and sport flying is physically tough on the body, and managing the basics like body functions (while this is all going on) has to be (lets say) "preplanned".
If you know enough about planes to catch it -the thing that impressed me the most was the RWR tone in the tomcat.. its totally different than what in the Hornet and they nailed it. My guess is very very few people would notice or even care but it was a great touch.
The Box office is the final word, and that my friends is smashing records.

This short video is with the with University of Nebraska President Ted Carter. Ted is, a retired Navy Vice Admiral, a TOPGUN graduate and fighter pilot. President Carter's was there when the first ‘Top Gun’ movie was made.

My parents went to see it in the theater. Said it was one of the best Tom Cruise movies they've seen in a really long time. They enjoyed it.
For me, I'll probably wait till it's on pay-per-view and watch it at home with the family. My wife isn't a huge Tom Cruise fan but she'll watch it and most likely enjoy it. She got tired of the first movie because they play it at work a lot in the break room. She works for a company that does government contracts building gun parts and other pieces for the military planes and choppers. So they are all a little bias anyway
As far as the first Top Gun, I liked it, still do. Liked the music, the actors, the plot etc... So I suspect I'll enjoy the new one. Glad to see a sequel, just sad it took so long to a point some of the original actors aren't in it.

My wife and I saw the movie. We very much enjoyed the movie and felt very good after seeing the movie. The scenes were very well done, but those that are pilots may have a different opinion.
We saw Top Gun on opening day and enjoyed it. My wife loved the shirtless guys playing football on the beach.

Correct, I was referring to the first one because you quoted "Top Gun" when you mentioned the shirtless scene, so I thought you were referring to the first movie. But I was actually just trying to shed a little light on Crush's question.

I thought it was a good movie... much better sequel than most.. We took our 13 year old daughter and then had to come home and rent the original and watch it with her. It was a mistake that we didnt show it to her before hand but it has been rerun so often I took for granted that she had seen it.
