Congratulation to Doug Perry! After a year of negotiation my buddy was able to purchase an amazing car; 1969 SS, equipped with a 375 hp 396, M22, 4:10 and a cowl hood.

It gets better;
the one owner car is still rolling on it’s original tires, with black XT wheels, original paint, original interior with a delete radio, original engine that has never been removed, original smog, original exhaust and original shocks!

Wait it gets even better;
the car has its original POP, window sticker, build sheet (very few have been found on Norwood built cars), and invoice. The invoice shows the car was ordered with a delete heater. Unfortunately in 1969 the heater became mandatory.

If that is not enough, the car has its original 10 day 1969 dealership tag!

Doug has some amazing cars, this is another special car that fits very well in his collection.

The car will be shown for the first time at MCACN in Steve Shauger’s Vintage Certification display.

This car is one of those special cars that you here about but are rarely found. Well this car will be Vintage Certified at MCACN show in November. We are very excited to have this special car attend. The original owner had the car until a month or so ago when Doug took possession. The owner was a fanatic about preserving the car and it shows.... Congratulations Doug!!!!

Get your camera phones and note pads ready fellas this one will teach you a few things about 1969 Norwood Camaro production. I had the opportunity to see the car in person (including all the cars original factory and dealer paperwork ) you guys are in for a treat. The car has a documented 9500 original miles and it shows. It will most definitely be used in the future as a reference for how 69 Camaros were built in Norwood. Look forward to seeing the car again in Chicago.

This cars history and journey started way before I came along. My job is to honor the original owner...his wife and the car. It is a treat to be able to share it with others and get better acquainted with Norwood’s assembly processes. I am surrounded by good people as we all are. Thank you to Paul Laurenzi (Hugger SS) for introducing me to the owner almost a year ago. Special thanks to Amy, Frank, Matt, Matt, Austin and Ely. Affectionately we will call the car “Black Betty” . The statement that it is only original once refers to this car! This car is one of the few bench mark 1st generation Camaro’s. All of the parts are original to the car, even the tires and exhaust!

The original owner obviously did his homework before buying this car! He checked off all of the right boxes; 396/375, M22, 4:10, F41 suspension, quick ratio steering and a cowl hood. If that is not enough, the car is Tuxedo Black! No console or radio, if did not make the car go faster or handle better it was not ordered!

The new caretaker Doug (Doug always refers to himself as the “new caretaker” because in Dougs eyes, it will always be the original owners car), is always open to sharing his knowledge and his cars to help with the hobby and its growth.

I am looking forward to seeing it displayed in Chicago for the first time in 53 years!

Doug was challenged to bring a car to MCACN in 2022, I would say he met and exceeded the challenge!

Doesn’t one of the painters at Norwood remember what sheen he painted? I know it’s 53-55 years ago but someone should remember. If it was gloss it was gloss. If it was satin it was probably waxed over the years to appear gloss.

The debate will never end.

Amount of sheen on the rear panel blackout varied, due to many factors. It’s the same paint as the rockers.

At least for 1968 it was “supposed to be” 30 percent gloss. No reason to think 1969 was different.

It's not full gloss like exterior black 70%ish.
They still taped off the tailpanel, so the paint difference will be apparent at the tape line.
There are other black original paint 396 cars out there, with pics on this site, IIRC. :)

I hope I can see this car in person and how it compares to mine (very similar, except for mileage). Mine is 4 months later so there will likely be differences. When my car was invited to a vintage display there years ago, I learned so much from folks on how to tell a car's originality.

If I am reading my historical temperatures right for Cincinnati in the 4 week of February 1969 the temps were between 15 and 20 degrees that week, SO the tail panel looks exactly as it should given the cooler reflow reaction in the final oven.

On February 26th and again on the 27th it dropped to 0 degrees in Erlanger KY at the airport where the records were taken.

On the 26th It was 0 at the start of the shift and again at the end of shift.
on the 27th it was 0 at mid shift on DAY shift.

Norwood was another 20 miles north of there so its very likely temps could have been well below zero at the plant when these temps were recorded.

Laughing my ars off.....love you guys but siting ambient temps 55 years back is a sickness but a good one.
Really don't think any temp variance would effect something that chevy was in the habit of qc, the finish and it's consistency.

At the 1969 MY intro, black was an RPO color for a short time, then dropped. There were few early production black cars.

A famous early production black car [10 B 711] was the L78/auto SS owned by Joe Oldham. It was featured prominently in Baldwin-Motion ads and a few articles in pulp car mags back in the day. He wanted to delete the D90 stripe and Chevrolet refused to do it; early photos show it was built with a white D90. Shortly thereafter, he had the D90 stripe removed.

January 1969, black was added as an extra-cost color. Maybe at that time the default D90 color was changed to red.

this was a treat to see in person. I wish I could have seen the top side. Unbelievable car. Lucky owner. Noticed only a few differences to my car that is similar (curved neck 4 core vs not, scratching head on that) and did they write 'BLK' on the firewall (I did not get to see that). Red stripes were the same with distinct details. Car is an art piece.

If all the discussion is true on air temps impacting curing of paint, my car would have been bumping up against late June/4th of July temps which would have been quite different to this car. Mine is definitely not that dull and was a shock to see. I am sure mine was polished by hand. Temped to take some wax stripper to it now and see what happens.

Doug’s car did not receive the heavy duty curved neck radiator even though it is a 4:10 car. According to Steve S, 02D was to early and transition period for the radiator late April/May and early cars were white and later came with red. All of this information is documented on the build sheet.
Another interesting fact about Dougs’s car, it was ordered with Z28 F41 suspension which included 4 leaf springs and Z28 coded shocks. It was also ordered with fast ratio manual steering. Lastly it was ordered without a heater, but new requirements for windshield defrost in 1969 mandated the heater.

It was great getting to know the original owner John over the last several years and working with Doug to acquire this car.
In November of 1968, John originally ordered a black JL8 Z28 that never came in. In January, he switched his order to the L78.
The reason the car was not driven, John is a devoted father, husband and grandfather. He always told me that family and work took priority in his life and he really did not have time to enjoy the car as much as he liked. John, also like the preservation of the car. He acquired numerous hard to find NOS parts over the years thinking one day he may restore the car. We are all happy that day never came!

I am only assuming John bought the car to race and have fun with. That being said, the car still retains its original tires from day one with very little tire wear.

Those tire would have been bald in for first week if it were me.

Congratulations Doug Perry for scoring a 99% invented certified class at the Camaro Nationals. This car is truly a benchmark time capsule!

As you know this car was Vintage Certified and achieved Time Capsule at MCACN. I had mentioned previously Vintage Certification would be participating again at the Camaro Nationals this year.
It seemed logical to provide a special Camaro survivor award, within the Legend program, hence the Legend Survivor. To participate in Legend Survivor a car must achieve Vintage Time Capsule.

Doug Perry's 69 SS Camaro L78 was awarded Legend Survivor Platinum with an overall score of 99. This car has set the bar by achieving and awarded top honors in both formats.
The Judging team consisted of Steve Shauger, Bob Harris, John Pollock & Josh Harris(tabulator).

It seems like Vintage Certification and Legends Survivor Certification go together like “Peas and Carrots”. We are very humbled to achieve Time Capsule and Survivor Platinum with this special car. This was all made possible by the original owner. Kuddos to him and his wife for their preservation of this fine car. The judging in both Chicago and Morgantown is not for the faint of heart but the team is fair and precise on every detail nose to tail. The bar has been raised by all the participants and caliber of cars .

Amazing car! But there has to be a better analogy than "peas and carrots". I mean, peanut butter and jelly, bread and butter, ice and cream!

Seriously, congrats on a great achievement!!
