Here is a homeowner question about carpets. We have a lot of 'light colored' wall to wall and it is time to freshen them up. Certain areas are more heavily traveled than others...typical.

So, should we rent a unit?? Buy a unit?? or hire it done??

Karen likes the idea of having our own machine so we can have some flexibility for the project. Any suggestions on options or experience with this would be appreciated.

You will probably be happier buying a nice one. We have a Bissell made for pet owners. I have hired it done before and it looks great for about 48 hours. Then the dirty areas would come back. So I would rent a machine and it was cheaper but had a little better results. The one that we own does better and if a spot comes back in a couple of days you have the luxury of hitting it again.

We always rented and cleaned our own carpets. For the amount of times that you will need to do this over the lifetime of the carpet I think it does not pay to own one. The ones you can buy are not the same as the ones you can rent and the ones you rent are not the same as the ones that the professionals who you can hire carry.

If you do wind up renting make sure you find the cleanest machine you can. A lot of people don't clean them very well after returning them. Before you use it, I would spend time cleaning it as you don't want other peoples dirt on your carpets.

I bought a Rug Doctor like the ones you rent. Think I got it at Costco. Works great when I bother to use it.

Come on Charley, I bet your carpets smell as fresh as a spring burnout with a slight scent of Polyglass.

I have 4 dogs in the house. You don't want to lay down on our carpet.
