Right side door mirror locate

I need a reference for the holes to mount the right side door mirror. I thought I had an assembly manual, but haven't seen/found it since the move 3+ yrs ago.

The door had a mirror at some point in it's past, but it did not come from the factory, as there is no reinforcement plate inside. I will make a plate, but would like to know if the existing holes are in the correct location.
Measuring from the front of the door, the front hole is ~ 9.25 back with ~ 3.5 width to the back hole. Unfortunately, the holes are not parallel from the top edge down, so I will be moving one, if not both of the locations. Front hole is ~ 1 1/16" from top edge and the is rear is 7/8".

If someone has a manual with the specs that could post a pic, I would greatly appreciate it.

There is no right side mirror from the factory so you are not going to see it in the assembly manual and that's why there is no reinforcement.

Interesting, never realized that. Odd the Camaro didn't have that as an option, as my '66 Chevelle and '67 C10 has them...
Anyway, do you know if the Firebird had the right side mirror ? The setback should be the same to clear the vent window post.

They were an accessory but never an option. I had one on my 69. Took it off & filled the holes during restoration. It was installed by somebody before me, but in the same location from LH to RH. I never could see out of it safely & it was an actual RH mirror. I would think if you were planning on using the mirror, it would need to be mounted to please the driver...Joe

I mounted a RS mirror on my 69 Z.

I made a template from the left side and flipped it. I don't think I deviated from that, but can check when I get home. Sometimes the RS needs to be moved back just a bit.

I also made a reinforcement plate out of 1/8 x 1/2 bar stock. Drilled and tapped it and attached to the inner side of the door with epoxy.

After doing some reading, it was a dealer installed accessory.

The '68-9 mirrors do seem to be side specific but are different from the '67 and without a vent frame, they can be mounted further forward. I looked at my left door and the holes in the right are about 1" further back, so I will keep that location, but weld up the back hole. They are spread too wide for a stock mirror mount anyway and I will align it perpendicular to the window ledge.

After driving semi for 40 years, I use the side mirrors way more than a rear view inside a vehicle. Something about having a wall right behind a person from a trailer necessitates learning to use the side mirrors...:smile:

That's me. Even though the Z is a restored #s car, I like to drive it from time to time.
It is a safety issue; I just like having two side mirrors.
I also put a right side mirror on my 69 Opel GT that is otherwise all original, down to the shocks. Even more important to me in that tiny car!
