I just in the last few weeks picked up a 67 pace car big block, decent equipped car very solid car, my question is, would this car be a track car or would it be one of the dealer replicas? I have a copy of the NCR S and the trim tag what do you think?

I don't see a fleet code designating it as a pace car. Are you sure it's a pace car?

Looks like a last minute zone support vehicle to be used by the zone during the week of the race. Black nose stripe but that’s ok.
The zone produced a diverse group of cars during race week including RS only cars, and blue toppers too.

Doubt that it would have been a track car built that late, but a great car none the less.

That's right It is not a car provided to IMS. It is very likely a car used by the Chevrolet Zone to provide local transportation to Chevrolet officials present for the race.

Is there information on how many L78's were used as zone cars at the event. I would have thought L48 & L35 automatic were the majority. Great find on the block!

Many of the Zone cars were Blue toppers and even those were L-48's.

The only documentation that would match the build date of this unit is page 23 of the activity book that calls out the cars to be assigned through the Zone to the Chevrolet HQ Room at the track. "Remaining Brass hat cars will be a zone prerogative and all requests for vehicles of this type will be referred to the Zone office"
Big block cars at the track in any circumstance (with the exception of #90 and #92) are a small minority of the total cars provided by Chevrolet.

Is it the camera angle or is the tag incredibly crooked?

Steve,
I noticed your post before you deleted it. To focus the answer specific to your question there is ZERO evidence that places any L-78 equipped Pace car replica at IMS in a support role during the month of May.
The earliest L-78 found to date was ordered through the Norwood zone and delivered for sale at Glockner Chevrolet here in Ohio.

I removed my post because I confused it with Jbtech L78 convertble block he found. I had just read that thread and switched to this thread which is L35 automatic. :)

Sorry to bring up an old post, I found this thread tonight while doing some research on the Glockner dealership.
Do you have details on the Glockner L78 car you mentioned? Thinking it might be my dad’s…
