What is the correct valve cover for a 1972 SS 454 Chevelle? I thought they were painted but all the restorations I looked at had chrome covers? Also, would like to confirm that the oil fill caps were still the turn to hold style, not the push in style.
Thx

Thank you! Many restorers must prefer the flashier chrome covers, it appears.

That, and many of them probably don't know what's correct.

Painted with rubber push in oil cap.
X-2 I had a numbers matching "W" Vin, 1972 SS-454 Factory A/C Coupe that had painted valve Covers with a push in oil fill cap as well. Bill

........and from what I've seen on Survivor cars the oil fill cap must have been installed when the engine was painted orange as they all have orange paint on them. Same holds true for "U" code 402 cars as well.

Jake is correct. The valve covers for the 72 U and W codes are the same. They were painted with no decals. Oil plug was push in rubber.
Here are some pics of my old W Code vert.
