It was (past tense) a very nice car. Link to the drop in the comments section.

Thanks Tim, I was on that link and it doesn't work for me, just a still pic and a blank box where a vid from yahoo might be, but I don't have yahoo, so can't see it.

I had to scroll further down to catch the video. I don't have Yahoo either. It's sad to watch

That is painful. I've watched dozens of car move on/off the upper decks, makes me nervous every time.
Call me a control freak but if my own old cars move anywhere, I do it myself. - Bill W

I still can't get any sort of vid on that page. Must be my VPN and all the spam/scam protection on my computer. It stops a lot of ads and vids from opening due to tracker cookies and such.
I'm with ya Bill, on moving my stuff myself.

That was painful to watch,
I'm always terrified when one of my cars is in that position. Put something behind the wheels to stop the car from rolling. It looks like nobody was in this car if I'm seeing things clearly. How did he intend a rolling car to stop?

I’ve watched this nightmare several times and my heart just pounds.
I do not see anyone inside the car that would be able to apply the brakes.
As a stopgap safety feature roll it out using a cable attached to the frame.
Once it is in place to lower, set brakes, release cable and lower.

That reminds me of the 1968 Beaumont SD396 convertible that Bill Wertheim sold several years ago. While being delivered, the delivery truck/trailer went over the side of a mountain with the Beaumont and a few other cars inside the trailer.

OK, I turned my VPN off and was able to watch it and yes to everything you wrote about preventing this from happening. This is just plain and simple stupidity by the driver.

Looks like he had a chock there and the car bounced over it. Whenever I roll a car back off a trailer w no one in it there’s always a strap to catch it even if I use a chock it’s especially hard to hold a car from rolling fast on the deck like that. But having a strap on it has its issues too like when it snaps tight coming up and slapping the body but it’s still way better than this outcome. BTW who bought this car Joe Biden ? Come on man! sounds just like him

Heart wrenching video. When I went back and looked at the comments in the Bring a Trailer Auction, it looks like the seller and owner of the car for the past 44 years was trying to track it down and buy it back from the insurance company after the incident.

That bat sale is confusing as heck. Wouldn't one of them know where it went and how can one be the "seller", if the insurance co owns it ??

The delivery fiasco was post BaT. So, the insurance company of the transporter paid off the new owner and thus they now own it

So the comments about the car getting dropped and damaged are after the auction. Kinda confusing and weird that the comments can still be left after it ends.

Auction was on 2/28, most of the comments re the car coming off the lift are in April, after the auction. You can still add comments on that car/auction today on the BAT site.

What an idiot.
I wonder if the insurance would cover the cost of the vehicle plus the commission paid or just the cost of the vehicle. Being in the insurance business for 43 years makes me wonder about the settlement. It would stink to buy a $100,000 vehicle, pay 10% commission and loose that $10,000 in less than a week.
Ya think that Transport driver still works for that company today?

always think ahead with anything you do in life. work, pleasure, relationships. he shouldve had two chocks to prevent this.

Might be surprised. Labor laws may protect him from removal, as it was an "accident" and not willful behavior.

I was wondering about the settlement as well. The insurance lot page lists the value at $111,000, which was the high bid. He paid 5% to BaT and the shipping cost (which I would hope they refunded) plus he may have paid tax and license already.

The carrier may have had a deductible amount on his insurance to keep the coverage cost lower too, just like we do on our cars. Since the buyer never got to use the car, the carrier will be liable to refund every dollar it cost the buyer. Getting anything beyond what the insurance pays from them may be another story. That's where the lawyers come into play and lawsuits start flying, but with the video proof of the drivers screw up, there should not be a shred of doubt about who is responsible.
Edit, I was just on the carriers website. They are company owned trucks, not leased O/O's. That is a big plus. Also, I copied this from their page...
"Unrivaled $2,000,000 cargo coverage insurance on each of our trucks."
Seems they should have the ability to pay for this in full.
