View Full Version : Manufacturing Plant Pic / Discussion "sub forum"

I had an idea after Ralph Spears had posted the pic of what seems to be the Van Nuys assembly line. I have studied that pic, in addition to the others that were offered up in the thread. Speaking for myself, these photos certainly fall into "a pic is worth a thousand words" definition. I feel they serve an important place in the understanding of the manufacturing process, and how that influences the preservation / restoration of the very cars we love.

After that, I initiated a conversation with Steve Shauger about the idea of another topic...... or "sub forum", that would catalog these photos. Perhaps it could ultimately become a central source for the pics and discussion.

I am of the opinion there are members here (and abroad) that are a wheel house of knowledge and information. I feel this knowledge goes far beyond what a printed judging manual can ever offer. These people / information can never be measured in terms of importance and value. Sadly, some of these members have already passed. Worse yet, time is not our friend on the mortality topic. If this were going to get done, we best get busy.

I write this post to gauge interest in the idea. The topic would take some work on Steve's part (which I do not take for granted). If there is a profound interest, we could even divide up into individual plants, not necessarily just sorted by OE manufacturer.

So, your thoughts?? Got an idea? I'm all ears!

Tim

I support this idea, Tim. I think it would be invaluable to put all of these pics in one spot. My only thought is if there would be a cutoff model year and then would it be better to create a couple subforums by plant(s) or carlines?

I agree Paul. Steve and I discussed the idea of creating a "key". Asking the poster to add a comment (i.e. #norwood) so it could be searched and later separated by plant if this picked up momentum.

This is one of my favorite examples. So much can be learned in this pic.

Tim, I notice a TI coil and distributor with black cap!

1965 or 66 non power brake chassis is next in line.

Absolutely endorse this, I've wished for some time, that these vintage pics could have their own thread, but, much to Steve's dismay, I encourage the pics of specific plants to be grouped together, rather than everything mixed up. It would help us see each plant's procedures in an organized manner. I'm not very good with organizing but I would be willing to help with this in some way.
As for years included, I think 1962 was the start of the factory supercars for drag racing. The big 3 were building some amazing combos that led to where the genre eventually went. Maybe end with the 1972 models ???

----While I have seen this pic before, when you said that the chassis had a TI coil I realised that the car had to be a 64, not a 63 (1st year for TI) then I noticed the 64 style shifter. What thru me was the exhaust blackout which has been discussed just lately, but only for 63s. Apparently this blackout extends into the 64 production year. I'm almost posative the blackout like this did not extend into 1965.....Bill S

This is a great example why I feel the plant photos are so important:biggthumpup:

If we do pursue this I ask that you feel free to edit or delete my responses to keep the thread "clean".

I've found it's hard for me to know how much and what to share, and that I can't predict what is going to resonate with the readers here and what is going to miss.

I would hate to clutter up an otherwise useful thread with chaff.

Keith,

I suspected you were one of the individuals who had an large amount to offer. To roughly quote a friend of mine........"these are mass produced, hand built cars".

They have so many little inconsistencies due to inventory management alone. Hence the idea for the topic.

In short, have at it Keith!

This is a great concept ! These photos help everyone with their efforts.

1965 or 66 non power brake chassis is next in line.

My guess is it's a '65 lineup...

Disc brakes and a "HL" coded 365HP engine with T.I., which I don't believe was available in '66.

Keith,
With someone with first hand knowledge, I like the chaff.
