Scripps is local to me and his former mansion is about 2 miles from my house.
Among his other endeavors he entered into the automobile business with Mr Booth.
The cars had many advanced features and appealed to movie stars and other elite rollers like the King of Spain.
Groucho Marx was a Scripps-Booth owner and was fascinated by the automatic push button door opener, saying it was "sheer magic". That was the feature that sold him on the car.

The Packard Plant is still standing and is an urban ruin.
Probably always will be, just due to the size and expense to do anything with it.
The Packard Proving Ground is still around and in pretty good shape, playing host to car shows and other events throughout the year.

Never knew about the Scripps Estate. There were several tycoons of that time that involved themselves in animal husbandry and food crops - trying to help the farmer and improve the food supply - with limited success. At least not as much of an impact as they had hoped.
>He built a motorized boat engine...
There's a bit of editing that didn't get finished. ;)
