View Full Version : 1969 Z/28 - Locating Previous Owners

I just purchased a 69 Z/28 that was originally sold out of Cagle Chevrolet Inc. in Lake Charles Louisiana. It came with a lot of previous owners’ information such as a Protect-O-Plate, old photos, applications for certificate of title and passenger car registration forms, an application for a warranty transfer through Chevrolet Motor Division form from one owner to another, loan disclosure statements, owner’s vehicle identification cards, bill of sales, vehicle registration forms and certificate of titles.
This car intrigues me so I have decided to try and track down all the owners in the USA and talk to each of them about their history with the Camaro. I have always loved doing this sort of investigative work just so I know what the little car has been through……the good, the bad and the ugly.
If I have the names/addresses (old addresses) of all the previous owners, is there a process or website I can go to to get current contact information to start my journey?
A BIG shout out to the last owner from Texas, Larry Feidler (Port Neches Texas). I was able to track him down via Facebook and he has been great to talk with and is still a current 1969 Camaro owner. He has supplied me with all sorts of valuable photos and details about the Z/28.
Any help would be appreciated.

I'm eager to hear the responses to your post. I have also tracked down previous owners on my 69 Z all the way back to the early 70's but just can't get information on the original owner.

I would see if there is a family member still living there. Cold calls out of the blue are typically unwanted and don’t usually don’t bear fruit. Write some heartfelt letters and see if you get any response.

Thanks guys for the input.
I originally tried a few sites myself and since then, tried both suggestions here and came up with almost the identical information.....pretty much squat.
I do realize privacy laws exist and that combined with the passing of time makes this a tough process.
As far as a heart felt letter, that was a great idea I never thought of. I will see if I can muster something up and send out some letters.
If something bounces back, I will let you know.

A buddy sent a nice letter to a previous owner along with a fifty dollar bill taped in there, got an immediate response.

Here's a story about locating owners and finding his old Trans Am 20 years later!

Man I love this site.
"A buddy sent a nice letter to a previous owner along with a fifty dollar bill taped in there, got an immediate response".......now that is another great idea stacked on top of another. A fifty dollar bill might just do the trick. Thank goodness there are not 15 previous owners, it could get costly....lol.
Your article Steve was encouraging to say the least. Its amazing what happens when you start lifting up rocks to see what's underneath them. I have been down this road before with chasing car histories and this one appears to be one full of excitement so far.
I will post some pics tomorrow.
Thanks again to the SYC site and its members.

Trying to locate previous owners of my old cars was one of the things that I liked best about the muscle car hobby. Unfortunately, as the years went on, reaching a relative of the now deceased previous owner was becoming the norm. I uncovered some crazy stories of murder and suicides that really had me nervous every time I made a call.

Thanks again guys.
Sit tight for a couple of days as I am hoping to have some more information about the Camaro which I think will be worth the wait.

The history hunt has been good to me so far.
I spoke to the original owner who ordered the Camaro Z/28 from Cagle Chevrolet. The gentlemen is 80 years old and has a wickedly sharp memory. He was able to answer all my questions without any hesitation and is now in the process of going through some boxes/files and trying to find me some more information.
I forwarded him a pic of the car he took when he first took delivery of it in 1969. See below.
Unfortunately the "born with" 302 and M21 are long gone but the car still retains its original BV rear end housing with 3:73. As odd as this sounds, this is a strange blessing for me. I have always wanted a 69 Z/28 that I could beat on since I was a punk, and as they became more valuable, that dream looked like it had disappeared. But not now, it may be back.
The car came with a fresh "stock" rebuilt non DZ 302 that will rev 7,000 easy, an additional 302 that needs rebuilding, a M20 and the 12 bolt rear end that were both rebuilt 1,000 miles ago.
So here is potentially the new set up......the rebuilt 302, the existing M20 or a much preferred Autogear M22 or M23 transmission (always wanted to have that M22 gear whine) and a set of GM 4:88 gears that I have been sitting on for 25 years.
There is a bucket full of things that are incorrect on the car which I will be addressing this winter. And I will leave it Hugger Orange as the paint is 42 years old and still looking decent.
It's just going to be a beater that I WILL drive.

Is that Ed Stern's X 1969 Z28 by any chance?
Looks the same, I recall it was the wrong color and not correct engine.

I entered my name as well as other family members to see if my/their old addresses came up. In all instances it came back with "no information is known".

The color change was done in 1988.
And the paint still looks great aside from some chips and the odd scratch which I have no problem with as I no longer have to be paranoid of driving it.
