3910 back from Eric

[1967 4K]

Yesterday I received my Holley 3910 back from Eric Jackson. Not to pleased with where the Fed Ex driver left it. Eric had it packaged very good with plenty of bubble wrap around it.
Now hope to get a little bit of warm weather and put it back on and try it out.

Part of the problem with FedEx, is many of the locations and trucks are privately owned. At least with UPS the drivers are held to a higher standard (not that UPS does not have it's issues).

I saw the pic that Eric posted. Truly underwhelming. Glad your carb is safe with you. Eric’s got my 3910 now. Return shipping delivery for mine shouldn’t be an issue since it’s going to a commercial shipping/receiving company.

Richard what is the date on your carb?

Philip Cancilla, who is also a sponsor on this site did my though for he is driving distance to avoid the shipping issues. Glad that you at least received yours and didn't get stolen.

Your carbs date is prior to the cars build date. That’s okay IMO.
I didn’t know how costly the 67 3910’s were until Eric informed me how much insurance he applied to the return shipping to me. He said it would be hard to replace, especially finding a correct date one for my car.

Jason, I asked that question here before I shipped mine. I wanting to get a feel about how much insurance to put on it. Didn’t get any answers so I guessed a 1,000.00 worth.
Eric informed me I was way short and he would put 5K worth of insurance on it for shipping it back to me. Luckily all the shipping worked out and I have my carb in hand.

$5K to me sounds way on the high side for a 3910 but, if accurate, I'm glad I have an extra.

I think 2500-3500 is more in line for an unrestored unit. That said, its hard to keep up with pricing on these since the get more rare every time one changes hands. That is why I asked many of you are very in tune with these.

I dont use FedEx and never will again. Bought a pair of SB heads and they were delivered late at night and the driver just dropped them on my concrete steps and heard the big thud. I couldnt get out there in time to say something the driver was gone real fast. I use UPS only, not to say they dont make mistakes but way better. That carb left like that by FedEx is horrific.

I was also a sponsor here for years, but I stepped away to redirect my limited resources. Phil is also a friend of mine I've known for roughly 20 years, and I'm happy to see him on the board, I hope he does well here.


Phil had restored Richard's 3910 but it had some minor driveability issues that needed to be addressed so he asked me if I'd take a look at it for him. I didn't re-restore Richard's carb, I re-rebuilt it and made a few small changes that should alleviate the issues Richard was having. If he still has any issues with it, I'll of course stand behind the carb 100%.


To note, Phil's shop didn't make any "mistakes" with the carb, it just needed some minor tweaks to address the issues Richard was having. It's no big deal, stuff like this happens to every carb builder out there. I've went back over Phil's work on occasion as I know he's went back over some of mine. Hell, Phil and I talk fairly frequently and often wind up discussing "problem child" carb jobs--as the old saying goes, "two heads are better than one."

The last mid `67 dated 3910 I heard about through the grapevine sold in the mid $3K range as a core roughly a year or so ago. When you factor the cost to restore one, plus shipping, you're sneaking up awfully close to $5K. When it comes to insurance, I always err towards the high side just for safety's sake. REAL dated 3910's ain't exactly falling out of trees any more.

*EDIT* FWIW, all 3 major shipping carriers are below horrible. UPS is hands-down the worst in my experience, followed closely by USPS. I've had the least amount of trouble with FedEx, but that IS NOT meant as a compliment to FedEx in any way, shape or form.

My car had that fall on its face thing I call it. Give it gas and it just won’t take it. If i feathered the throttle and kinda babied into taking gas it would pick up and go on. This I my way of trying to explain how it acted.
I played around with the timing some and made sure the vacuum advance was working properly which it was. I kept coming back to the carb was the issue and after hearing about Eric’s work here on the site for a long time I felt it was time to ask him to take a look at it.
I’m cleaning a few gas stains on the intake now and addressing a couple more engine compartment stuff and should have it back together soon.
