Jim, good luck on the search! It took me a while to find my correct 8338 9 B back in the 2000s. I went through the rabbit hole figuring out which starter was correct (69 350/300 4sp) since we did not have the full info back then.

Also, I remember trouble sourcing the correct bolts (2 of the same size), because the specs are not clear. The new bolts I found are a tad too long, so I have to use a washer. But if you have the original bolts, can you provide a pic and specs? thanks

Hello kevin , not shure if I have the correct bolts on my starter . The car is running and I do drive it . When I do locate a starter I will reach out with specs on the bolts .

I thought the 350/ 300hp 4Spd cars got a 1108361. I believe that's what my 69 Pace Car has.

I also believe the 338 is for Corvette and not Camaro

Again, there is a lot of mis-information about this starter. Jerry's 1993 Z28 book (I think 1st edition) had a mistake on the starters on page 71 which I discussed with him when I was looking for the correct L48 starter. He posted a lot about it a while back on CRG and Kurt and others dug in and confirmed the data. Jerry was discussing correcting the data in his 4th edition.

For 1969 the SS350 only, it had 3 starters. The Automatics had the small flexplate so they received 1108361 (early) or 1108420 (late) for both PG or TH350. Because the L48 4-speed had the large flywheel it received the 1108338 starter. 1967 and 1968 SS350's only list one starter for the L48 (1108338) in CRG's starter info: http://www.camaros.org/engine.shtml#starters

So Jim is looking for the correct starter. I just tacked on because of the bolt issue. :)

The 8365 starter (jl8z28) is for a L6 with the small flexplate/flywheel per CRG's page.

These are the starter bolts for the 1108338 and the 1108418.

KevinW,
Thanks for the CRG info.

Looks like I'm looking for a Jan, Feb or early March 1108338 starter for my 69 Pace Car. Pirkle sold / restored mine and had said the 361 was the correct one, which was confirmed by Jerry's Book, but like you said had a mistake. Thank you for the information.

Dave, I am curious now. If your Pace car is a 4-speed, then it should have the larger 168 flywheel (11" clutch), which the 8338 starter fits. If you were able to install and use the 8361 starter, your car must have the smaller 153 flywheel (10.5" clutch). Hmm, if it mounts and runs, did the nose get swapped? I just looked at the 1970 HBC 8338 starter ($450) and it has a nose with the long/short bolts (strange).

Anyways, I have a 9B4 8338 starter I bought from Jerry. But its a bit early for my May/June SS350. If you run across a April/May starter, maybe we can do some horse trading.

As to the bolts, the repro ones I found years ago look similar to the GM ones, but are a bit long. I had to use a washer to mount it, but that's fine. My car is not on the road yet :( . I just have to keep my eyes open for a more reasonable GM one at the swap meets.

Kevin,
This Post put me down a rabbit hole, but I managed to climb out today.

I just purchased (2) two 1108338 starters, dated (9 B 18 and 9 C 4) wasn't sure of which date I really wanted for my 03D Build so I purchased both....lol

Okay, as to my Pacer it has the #733 Flywheel, which is 11" (168 tooth) and 621 Bell. My car is also not on the road yet and not together.

The starter I have 361 has the straight bolt pattern with the aluminum nose, which is for the smaller flywheel (153 tooth) and not correct for my car.

Being that I was told it was the correct starter I was going to change the nose with the diangled / staggered bolt pattern one. I never did because I wasn't sure if it took the aluminum staggered bolt pattern or the cast iron staggered two hole nose.

The two starters I purchased today have the cast iron staggered 2 bolt pattern.

168 tooth or the easy way 14" diameter.

Dave, glad this post helped you get the correct parts before you tried to assemble it and found out it was not going to work :)

If you could PM on where you bought the starters, I would appreciate it. thx
