If anyone has run their '70 Deuce recently or if you have information on past magazine "test runs" please post the info or your elapsed time. Thanks

Quarter mile times will vary by a large amount according to how well the car is set up, the driver, the track, the air quality, etc. The time can be from high 12 sec to mid 14 sec. Here is a link to a COPO shootout were a 1970 COPO LT1 Nova ran 12.9 sec.

Mike:

That is a good question that is hard to answer! JoeC is correct when he refers to the variables that are always present for drag racing. I know that fellow '70 Yenko Nova owner N.Robbins has raced his 4speed car at his local track and at the Pure Stock drag race. The two biggest variables for him was traction and air quality. When the track was in good shape, (ie; the tubbed cars had laid down a lot of rubber and there was some traction compound left), and the air was 65 degrees and dry, the '70 Yenko Nova ran a 13.45 at 108+. This mph obviously shows that there was still some traction problems - but not as bad as most runs.

When this same car was run at the Pure Stock race in Michigan, it ran 13.81 at 103+. This was due to; traction, 88 degrees and humid, and a headwind. The silver COPO Nova that was featured in the MCR article was also at this particular Pure Stock event. This car ran a 13.64 at 101+. The difference of a tenth-and-a-half is due to Jim Johnston's shifting in the silver car. (Jimmy is an excellent 4speed driver!).

The real world time at your local grudge night track for a '70 Yenko Nova in stock form would be around 13.5 - 13.6, at around 104-105.

N.Robbins planned to continue working the bugs out of the Yenko, but then decided to restore an L79 Nova to race at the next Pure Stock event. This past Sept. he raced his '68 L89 Nova that is shown in the current Muscle Car Review.

Anyone else have any time trial tickets?? I am working on getting some details from some original owners and their drag times.

JoeC: yeah, it was a great race, to see these COPO's run into the 12 sec. range, but it's just a shame to see a rare Chevelle brake the Original rear end. But the other two COPO's did great. Wonder if Peter Got the rear end fixed... http://www.yenko.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Pete did get the rear fixed in the COPO Chevelle, lucky for him the center section broke rather than the axle tube with the numbers stamped into it!!

Jimmy Johnston was running the Chevelle for Pete the following year, (1998), at the Pure Stock drag race. It was the fastest mph car there that year at 108.31, and 13.161 et. It's qualifying time was 12.89!
