In no immediate hurry, but I'm shopping for transportation from Newark N.J. to Seattle area on open car Hauler......all the Big Brokers are giving me the $1000 normal quotes....Is there any way to deal directly (for CA$H) with a owner operator truck driver.......Thanks, Chuck

There are alway ads from large and small carriers in Hemmings. I've found Road Scholar to be the cheapest for enclosed transportation. Try www.roadscholar.com (http://www.roadscholar.com)

Okay, Chuck, now you gotta tell us all about that 70 L78 or Z28 you just bought out NJ way...

Do you really want to ship something on an open hauler? I used Intercity Lines to get my JL8 from CA to NJ for $1000 in an enclosed trailer.

Twice I have hooked up with carriers who were not full and gave me reduced rates, rather than travel coast to coast half full. And in covered units. The "family-owned" operations are more apt to give you a break. If you call them, tell them you will be standing by with your car should they find themselves in that situation.

Thanks for the replys so far hope there will be more with other specific names. I never considered a enclosed carrier as I assumed the price would be too high, but as I have adequate time I can wait and see......The car is a survivor original 1970 L-78 Camaro but quite frankly its in need of restoration.
Does NOT need 1/4 panels but the small dog leg sections are rusted and will need replacing from a donor body.....Five years ago the front fenders and lower valance were replaced with NOS....I got the RARE aircleaner and all the correct dated engine components EXCEPT the smog......Car is Classic Copper.......I will post pictures when I get some film developed as I didnt use the digital camera this time......Later, Chuck/"Rainy Seattle"

When I was looking for a transporter, I found that Exotic Car Transport (1-800-766-8797) was the most inexpensive for my trip, which never happened. They have enclosed trailers.

Chuck, just had Reliable ship my GTO from OH to SC. Asked for and received the quote as open thinking that I seldom see Reliable transport anything open. Sure enough it went enclosed at open rates. I called most shippers advertising in Hemmings and they were all within $50 to $100 of each other.

Nice find Chuck!
Does this mean we will stop seeing your wanted ads in Hemmings as well as on this B/B for 1970 L-78 Camaro and parts?
Just teasing ya. http://www.yenko.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

Chuck, try KIWI transport, 1-800-762-7973. A dealer friend of mine is using them to ship a car (OPEN) from Washington to Jersey (I think) in the next week or two, so maybe they can do a pickup for you as well. Don't know about their rates, but he says they're a professional, good outfit.

I'm sure you could find someone willing to help you out if you pay cash. Just do something like half up front, half on delivery so you don't get taken. $1,000 is probably going to be the norm since it's such a long distance (if you use a company, anyway). Friend of mine used these guys https://www.a1autotransport.com to deliver a car from Hoboken to Portland, Oregon for $750. Might try them.

Sorry, I just realized this thread is from 2001 and it's probably taken care of.
