I was purusing "The Chevelle SS Restoration Guide" by Paul Herd and came across some production figures in Appendix B,on page 237.
Listed is 500(with a foot note) as production
quantity for the 1967 427/425 hp Chevelle.
The foot note reads: Estimate; 500 were needed to qualify for racing.

Stefano, don't put too much into what is in that book. There is a lot of misinformation. Where he got that figure was from an old magazine article that stated Motion Performance built approx 500 427 Chevelles in 1967 to allow them to run in NASCAR. I don't remember which magazine it was but I have discussed this with some other authors of automotive books and they showed the info to me. I believe this has come up many times before on this forum...........RatPack.............

Thanks Rat_Pack,
I wasn't aware that this was discussed prior. The rehashed stuff must get old quick. I appreciate everyones patients.
It is ironic that I used the book to cross reference some other production figures just last night.
If you want a chuckle ,check out page 156 the lower left hand corner. My copy was published, looks like sometime after 1992. I don't know if there has been a correction since.
Throw the Herd book in the garbage. It is well known by Chevelle people that it contains many mistakes. NASCAR approved engines whenever they wanted. Sometimes they required 500 engines to be sold to the public but did not have to be in the same body as the race car. The Ford 429 was approved by selling 429 Mustangs. The 1963 Chevy 427 Mystery Motor was allowed to run for a short time even though it was a prototype. NASCAR allowed the Chevy guys to run a 427 in 1965 even though there was no 427 in 1965. The 1965 L78 396 block could take an over bore to make 427cu.in. and was raced this way in 1965. A very interesting story developed from 66 to 68 with Chevy, Smokey Yunick, NASCAR, and 3 radical 1966 427 Chevelles.
We are talking about this Ebay 66 427 Chevelle right now on Team Chevelle.
Echoing the same attitude as here.
And that Herd restoration book is a good source...if you run out of Firewood!
Throw it away.
