Shor, neat pics! I was under my car looking at the vin on the pad by the oil filter. This area is very rough and they did not get the numbers in very deep! You think they would want to put them on a machined area? why did they move the vin from the machined pad on the engine? Anyone know?

If I remember correctly, so the alternator did not have to be removed on the assembly line to get at the pad and stamp it. The engine plant impression was already there.

That makes sense. Were'nt the COPO chevelle vins stamped on the machined area? I looked at a Yenko Chevelle block a couple of years ago and I think the vin was on the machined area?

William, if you click on the picture again it enlarges by about10x. Tom, is your Yenko original drivetrain? What bolts do I use for the engine stand? Do I use the uper holes that the bellhousing bolted to?

I've seen '69 Chevelle 375HP 396's with the VIN on the pad, but have not seen a COPO 427 with one, but that doesn't mean there aren't any.
I know up until early '69, all pads had the VIN for Camaros coming out of Norwood, then they started stamping by the filter. I don't think Van Nuys cars were ever stamped by the filter, but don't know for sure.

The best way to mount your engine on the type of stand that you have is without the bellhousing and clutch asmbly.

You then use grade 8 or better bolts and the bellhousing mounts.

Do not keep the weight of the complete engine and accesories and trans on just the two mounting points for any length of time, the threads may pull out.

Yes, mine is original drive train. (engine,trans and rear).I looked at a Yenko Chevelle here in Wisconsin a couple of years ago that had the original engine and I am pretty sure the vin was stamped on the machined pad? James Berry owns the car now, maybe he can shed some light on this subject.

I think it's relative to when Norwood kicked it off of the assembly line. I think the cars that came off early in '69 had them on the pad, and after that they stamped by the filter.

Now that I think about it, I've not seen a Chevelle BB stamped by the filter...

I heard that the number was stamped on the rough casting by the oil filter to help prevent tampering with the vin. You can't grind off the number and restamp it as easy as on the deck pad.

I have seen Van Nuys and other plants 1970 Chevelles stamped down by the oil filter.These were almost always earlier built cars.

I believe the oil filter area was another less obvious area to stamp the cars VIN# to match up if stolen.

In some of the car plants the alternator was probably already on the engine when it got to the VIN stamp station so the rear area was stamped. In other plants the alternator was not yet installed so the front machined deck area was used for the engine code and VIN. The Baltimore built '69 Chevelle that we bought new has the VIN and engine code stamped on the front deck surface. The other '69 has a CEXXXXXX replacement engine and it is also stamped on the front deck surface.

It looks like it is becoming a very fun summer project. I am waiting for Macneish's book to arrive and for now I am cleaning everything. This will be my first resto. Is this stuff interesting for you guys? Should I post updates as I go along? Let me know.

I was thinking about going anyway. I was going to roll the car into my enclosed trailer and bring the engine and trans on stands and having it all next to the car. Kind of a work in progress. Brian,if you can help me unload and set up when I get there I am all up for it. I think it would make for a very interesting display for alot of the folks that never get to see the "nuts, bolts and grease" side of a resto.
