View Full Version : Turbo Corvair Muffler Article
I was wondering if anyone had a copy or could direct me to the issue of Hot Rod Magazine that did a performance muffler comparison that included the Turbo Corvair mufflers. I beleive it was between 1968-70 and included several other performance mufflers.
I'm hoping for some type of reply. Does anyone remember running the Corvair Turbo mufflers on their Muscle Cars?

I remember a magazine from the '80's running a muffler shootout. I believe it was Hot-Rod ? The article was called a "shootout", and had a drawing of a cowboy character, I believe drawing a muffler from a holster.
From my past experiences.......There are ALOT better mufflers made today, than the old Corvair turbo muffler. The old Mopar Hemi mufflers used to be the ones to run, in the past. I owned a '64 Turbo Spyder that I restored in 1987. The Corvair Turbo cars, both early ('62-'64), and late model ('65-'66 the last year for a factory turbo 'vair), had restrictions built into the intake (air-cleaner & carb), and exhaust (muffler w/ more backpressure), to limit the amount of boost that the turbo could build, so as not to blow it up. They had NO wastegates on the cars. Changing to a bigger carb., or removing the muffler, would let the cars make more boost. You just had to be careful to not detonate it to death. That being said, I believe that there is a good amount of backpressure in the Corvair factory turbo mufflers.

I remember the article---geeeeeeezzzzze has it been that long? The other muffler that was highly regarded was the big Chryler car muffler, I think a New Yorker, but it weighed something like 60 pounds. Sorry I didn't keep the mag along with all the others.
I do remember that they compared the Walker Turbos and GM's and there was no significant difference except the Walkers carried more decibles. Since then there have clone after clone--still some today. I have Walkers on three cars today--and there just is a sound I like of a BB with Turbos. My L78 Nova runs 11.82-3 uncapped and 12.04-5 through the turbos. But turns the tires harder capped up. They probably wouldn't flow enough for a big motor but I would hate to lose the sound. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Thanks for the info guys. I am still helping my sister Monica with her Nova and we are trying to decide on the mufflers. She is running a 67 L88 and our goal is to keep it correct to the period- sound an all.
My pop felt the Corvair mufflers would perform well as he put them on his 67 Chevy II back in 1971, and they are still on it today! He said he chose the Corvair mufflers after reading a magazine article from the 60's. Gosh knows the one he is talking about couldn't have been the one from the 80's since the car is still unmolested from '71!
My other sister has a modern transverse muffler on her 69 Camaro. Although it hardly makes a difference in performance, it definitely has a newer sound.
Does anyone know what type of performance mufflers were available through GM in 69?

This is only semi-relavant, as I'm not familiar with the Crovair muffler in quesiton, but here is THE BEST exhaust article I have read: EXHAUST TEST (http://www.jr333.com/pontiac/exhaust.htm)
It found that the DynoMax mufflers performed the best overall, which is good, as we have been running DynoMax products on all of our cars, and are fixing to add another to the Camaro. In fact, DynoMax mufflers are recommended by Bob/Dan at the Pure Stock races. I think CopoPete has a DynoMax transverse on his white COPO (that runs low 12s!)...he seems to like it, and I can honestly say it sounds AWESOME! http://www.yenko.net/ubb/smilies/burnout.gif

Around here, the Turbo Corvair muffler was a very common "performance" muffler in the 60's and early 70's. Hands down, it seems to have been the muffler of choice in a small pole I took locally.
Please, anyone who actually changed some of the equipment on their cars in the late 60's let me know what mufflers you preferred then. I'm sure the has to be a few guys here that were actual gear heads in the Muscle Car Era, where are you?
